In the Steam lab we now have a “Periodic Table of Black History”. Students get to scan a QR code of a famous person to learn about how they were a part of black history. They are able to do this when they finish their assignment for the day in STEAM. They also get to report back to the class what they learned.
The students have also been taught that black history is not something we just learn about in February, which is Black History Month. We have talked about how history is important to learn about all the time. I’m encouraging our students that they can do anything they want. They should never let the color of their skin hold them back from anything. History happens every day! They are making history all the time.
As a whole class, we have been learning about one person a week and doing an engineering activity. This past week, we have learned about Mae Jemison, the first female African American astronaut to go to space! Ask your child about her. The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders, then worked on creating straw rockets and practiced our measuring skills to see how far we can get the rockets to go.
Don’t forget to ask your child who was the African American that I talked about making history in our very own school!
Soon the women of history will also be added to our Steam walls!
I can’t wait to keep encouraging our students that they can do and be anything. They need to always dream big!
