Instructional Focus
Where are we going? We start every unit and lesson with a clear description of the learning target so that students know exactly what successful accomplishment looks like.
How are we going? As students make attempts at the work, we listen to determine the gap between their curren performance and the intended outcome.
Where to next? Teachers then provide feedback to student so they can determine the strategies and steps to take to close the gap between their current understanding and their intended target.
The overarching goal of this cycle is to gradually transfer the responsibility of the learning back to the student. Teachers design instruction so that students increasingly learn to self assess their progress and seek help to reach their learning goals.
As parents, you can suport this process at home by asking thes same three questions of your children as they learn. You should see evidence that students clearly know their learning targets and you can determine what feedback to provide based on how they are perorming the task that you are observing. We'll share more details next month on the type and timing of feedback that best supports learning. The diagram below summarizes this instructioal focus.
