Michelangelo's Biography

  • Michelangelo Di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni was born on March 6, 1475.He spent most of his life in Rome.

  • His highest level of education was grammar school.

  • Due to his mother's illness he was placed with a family of stonecutters. His father allowed him to an apprentice at a painter workshop. He only studied for a year, when he was given the opportunity to study with the Medici Family

  • Michelangelo created sculptures. Two of his best-known works are the Pieta and David.

  • His patrons were Leonardo Da Vinci, Lorenzo De' Medici, Pope Clement VII, and Pope Julius II.

  • He died on February 18, 1564, Rome, Italy

The Pieta

  • It was created in 1498 -1500

  • It can be seen in Basillica di San Pietro in Vaticano in Rome, Italy.

  • What's so significant about this is that it shows that beauty on earth reflects God's beauty. It was unusual because it was a multifigure statue and Mary and Jesus weren't in proportion. Mary is a lot larger than Jesus. He also used deep cutting techniques to make realistic clothing.

  • I find this piece so interesting because it will help me become more religious.

  • This sculpture represents humanism because he is trying to represent the human form as divine.
