Mendenhall Principal's Newsletter

May/June 2018

Another Year has almost concluded!

Please forgive the delay in getting out the May/June newsletter, but since it is the last one of the school year, I want to make sure to acknowledge and thank all the wonderful volunteers who make Mendenhall such a vibrant and responsive community. Happy Memorial Day!

8th grade Reminders

1. For parents of incoming Granada students, you'll want to attend the last MAT Chat of the year on Thursday, May 24, at Livermore Public Library, room A, from 8:30 to 9:30 AM. This is an opportunity to have a conversation with Principal Daley.

2. Plans are in place to acknowledge our eighth graders' transition to high school, with the promotion dance on June 1st, the trip to Discovery Kingdom on June 4th and promotion on June 7th. A special 8th grade awards evening was held on May 21st. Awards were given to students who met the national criteria for the Presidential Awards for Academic Excellence, which were a 3.5 or higher grade point average for all three years, minus the last trimester, and a score of "Exceeds Standard" on the 7th grade CAASPP in at least one of the two assessments; to those who had maintained a 4.0 grade point average for all 8 trimesters of middle school; to those recognized by specific departments; to those who demonstrated Mustang life skills; to those who achieved perfect attendance; and to students receiving special awards, such as National History Day participation at the County level. Please note that all awards were given out at this event and will be acknowledged at promotion.

3. I hope all eighth graders take care of business so that each can participate in the activities. Field Day is Wednesday, June 7th, and will include a rally, talent show, and the Softball Championships.

4. Students who were eligible for Discovery Kingdom and the dance are expected to remain eligible through May 25th, in order to participate. So please help your child to stay focused.

Thank you to parents/guardians

Thank you to all who contributed to the cookie exchange. They were delicious (I think I sampled just about every kind) and beautifully presented, thanks to Pam and Morgan Mayhew, Kim Blanton and Lorria Mascari, who spent hours putting them all together. We staff members feel very appreciated!

Thank you to our wonderful PTSA 2017-2018 Officers

A final thank you to our amazing PTSA Board who anticipates our school’s needs and wishes with thoughtful ideas and continuous support:

Kim Blanton, president

Lorria Mascari, vice president

Jennifer Sisto, auditor

Dana Cooper, secretary

Maggie Tufts, financial secretary

Stacey Xenakis, historian

Victoria Short, treasurer

Paula Campbell, parliamentarian

Jennifer, Maggie, Victoria and Paula will be moving on as their children promote to high school, and we are very grateful for their service. Kim will take on the treasurer role next year. She just can't get away from the PTSA!

We couldn't do it without our amazing Math Counts Volunteers!

Thank you to Melanie Berry, Maj Cole, Jodie Corliss, Roger Everett, Michael Fidler, Rebecca Gutierrez, Dean Holunga, Carol Lee, Dave Manley, Nathan Meezan, Jakob Ostien, Kathleen Perry, Theodore Perry, Georgianne Schade, Nitu Shinde, Dhanna Singh, Preston Suess, Sharon Traynor, Charles Troup, and Elizabeth Varagas. These faithful volunteers keep our Math Counts program going strong. Special thanks to Mrs. Perry, Dr. Perry and Maj Cole. Their children promoted from Mendenhall many years ago, but their dedication is long lasting, and we are so grateful for them!

And speaking of volunteers . . .

Linda Smith and her committee of dedicated staff members put on a volunteer dinner on May 16th to thank our parents who continually step up to support the school, and a wonderful time was had by all.

And finally . . .

It is always difficult to bid goodbye to retiring staff members, and this year is no exception as we say "adieu" to our long-time staffers and Mendenhall family members: Ann Franklin, Dennis Rashé, Linda Smith and Zulema Sison. They are leaving behind very big shoes to fill, and we wish them well on their next adventure.

I wish you and your family a happy, restful, “unplugged” vacation, and I thank you for your ongoing support of our staff. We appreciate the trust and faith you place in us. I hope we have lived up to your expectations.
