Class Curriculum
Reader's Workshop
First Grade - This week we begin a new unit: Informational Text: Structures and Strategies. We will begin by identifying what makes non-fiction unique, strategies for reading non-fiction (accessing our prior knowledge), and identifying the author's purpose.
Second Grade - Our study of characters is coming to an end! We are going to start our non-fiction unit, which focuses on identifying key ideas and details, learning text features (like captions, subheadings, glossaries, etc.), learning how to read diagrams, and much mo
Writer's Workshop
We are almost done creating our first non-fiction books! I am so proud of all the hard work each and every one of your children have put into this project! They have introductions, conclusions, table of contents, glossaries, and so much more! This week we will be working on the editing and revision process.
Math Workshop
First Grade - This week as we begin our new unit on Problem Solving: Result Unknown - Adding to and taking from, we will be focused on 'Friends of Ten'. Friends of Ten are the number combination that equal ten: 10 & 0, 9 & 1, 8 & 2, 7 & 3, 6 & 4, and 5 & 5. We are working on building our fluency. Common Core, Singapore Math, and Greg Tang place great emphasis on the friends of ten to mold children into fluent mathematicians.
Second Grade - During this week, we will be wrapping up with time and begin our money unit. Students will be learning how to solve word problems involving money. If you are able, please send a bag of coins in for your students to use during this time. It doesn't need to be much. A suggestion would be: 4 quarters, 10 dimes, up to 20 nickels, and up to 50 pennies. There is nothing better than for your children to get real hands-on experience!
Social Studies
Our election campaigning is almost over (for our country and our classroom)! Students will campaign for their nominee on Monday then they will vote! Our Classroom President for the Day will be announced Wednesday morning. We had a great time being active citizens, volunteering our time to make campaign materials and they have each worked hard to become informed citizens for their election. Our next stop- learning about Harvest Festivals Around the World.

ThanksGIVING Meal
Dear Families,
This year we have the opportunity to serve an Odell Family in need. Our class will be providing a Thanksgiving meal for one of our own. I have emailed our a 'sign-up genius' email where you can sign up to bring a food item, I will also collect money that will be put towards a turkey. Please have all items turned in by Tuesday, Nov. 22nd.
I would love to hear any suggestions you may have to help with this special meal.
In addition to the meal if you would like to provide any 'extras' toiletries, paper towels, toilet paper, and laundry detergent are very helpful.
Sincerely,
Meghan Thinnes
