Consistency is Key! Build a Routine and Stick to It!
Here are a few tips for setting a consistent routine.
1. Establish routines! While no one is ever perfect, we should do our best to still aim to follow a set routine. That means waking up and going to bed at the same time each day and having a specific plan for completing school work and household responsibilities. Some people find that a simple to-do list works great while others need more a more complex outline of their day, perhaps even broken down to the hour. Be sure to make time for school work and study time, household chores, and social time. It may also be helpful to consider setting parameters on the amount of screen time allowed.
2. Use a planner! Utilizing a planner, either the old fashioned paper/pencil kind or a digital version, can help you remember when things are due and plan time accordingly. For example, if I know I have a test at the end of the week and an assignment due on Wednesday, I can plan my time around those big events to make sure I complete my assignment and study for my test. Include your other events in your planner as well. Let's be honest, we all need time with our friends and family. Balance is key! All work and no fun is never a good plan! Using a planner helps us manage time, stay on track, and not miss anything important.
3. Practice, practice, practice! It sounds pretty obvious, but sticking to a new routine means practicing it! It takes 21 days to create a habit, so if we can practice a routine consistently for 21 days, it will begin to feel more natural and normal. Of course, even the best-laid plans do not always happen the way we want them to, and that's okay! Just smile, stay positive, and try to pick up in your routine where you left off.
