Confederate Victory
General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia took on General Hooker's Army of the Potomac in Northern Virginia. This is Lee's perfect battle, his risky decision to divide his troops while facing an army double his size resulted in a major victory; however General Stonewall Jackson was injured by friendly fire and died.
Union Boys
The Army of the Potomac had 133,868 troops, with 1,606 casualties and 9,726 wounded.
Confederate Boys
The Army of Northern Virginia had 60,298 troops, with 1,665 casualties and 9,081 wounded.
Battlefield Strategy
Lee decided to split his forces to take on an army more than half his size in a move that won him the battle.
Significance to the war
This was one of the bloodiest battles of the war with 30,000 combined casualties. This was a very significant win for the confederacy with a tremendous loss of General Jackson. Chancellorsville was also one of Lee's greatest victories. After this Battle comes the Battle of Raymond and the Seige of Vicksburg.
