Need to Know
Message from the Headmaster: Long-time Selwyn House Elementary Head, Kathy Funamoto, announces her retirement. Kathy has decided that after 44 years as a teacher and administrator, it is time to step away and pursue other passions at the end of the current school year. Throughout this time, Kathy has been a caring, diligent, hard-working member of the community and she will be greatly missed. Her positive attitude, caring demeanor, and professionalism have helped many teachers develop and hone their teaching skills. At the same time, she has been a second mother to thousands of boys over the years helping them and their parents prepare for their secondary schooling. Kathy has taught me many things over the 33 years that we have worked together, first as a colleague, and then as an administrator. In fact, the very first Selwyn House trip that I went on was a Grade 7 overnight trip to Ottawa back in 1990. Kathy and I were two of the teachers responsible for the trip and since that time she has been a role model to me. I would like to express my sincerest thanks for all that she has done in her time at Selwyn House.Congratulations Kathy! Our entire community joins in celebrating your outstanding career. The senior leadership team has begun the search for her successor.
Middle School announces January Veritas Students of the Month: We are proud to honour students each month, nominated by teachers, in recognition of going above and beyond Veritas culture. Congratulations to the students: William Li (8-1), Bill Zhang (8-2), Izzy Ullah (8-3), Noah Vadish (8-1), Joey Downey (8-1), and Mathew Gendron (7-2). We thank them for their outstanding contributions! Wear your Golden Tie with pride!
Congratulations to all who participated in the Grade 8 Science Fair for your hard work and personal bests! A special congratulations to those who earned a medal. Many thanks to Ms. Corbie and Ms. Dalton who guided our students through this process and to the many judges who gave their time and feedback to our developing scientists!
Message from Selwyn House teachers and staff: Thank you to all the parents who helped make our Staff Appreciation Week such a wonderful experience! We are truly spoiled by the love we are receiving this week: coffee & snacks, lunch buffet, raffle gifts, and today’s spa treats and wellness activities. We also look forward to the casino and cocktails to come! Your thoughtfulness and generosity is so very much appreciated!
SHS Theatre: The Senior School play The Somewhat True Tale of Robin Hood is showing on Thursday, February 16 and Friday, February 17, 7:00 PM, in Coristine Hall. Parents, students and friends are invited to attend! Tickets are available at the door by donation. All donations go to Robin des Bois.
Math Contest: During the first period on Tuesday, Feb. 21st, all Grade 7 & 8 students will be participating in the National Math League contest. The contest will not count for marks, but will be a good opportunity for students to challenge themselves and to test their general math knowledge. Sample contests from previous years can be found here.
Parent-Student-Teacher Virtual Interviews March 2&3: Beginning Thursday, February 23 at 3:00 p.m., parents can make appointments using pickAtime, our online booking software. The instructions for booking appointments will be attached to next week’s mailbag. Please note that interviews are not mandatory and you have the option to contact a teacher to arrange a phone call or alternate meeting time if that is preferable. Students are expected to attend the Zoom interviews with their parents on March 2&3.
