PRINCIPAL CORNER
SECOND WEEK OF SCHOOL
.Dear OSES Families,
We hope your family is transitioning steadily into the new school year. Led by a caring group of staff members, our students are doing a great job. We are continuing to familiarize everyone with our policies and procedures, so that a desirable learning environment is created and students can flourish.
The mission of Orlando Science Elementary School (OSES) is to provide a well-rounded education with special emphasis in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), while using research-based and innovative instructional methods in a stimulating learning environment. OSES is committed to the social-emotional learning and character development of all students.
In order to achieve our mission, we must invest in all competition clubs on campus. OSES will be offering opportunities in competitive math, robotics, and Science Olympiad. Staff, students, and parents will need to be committed to the teams they sign up for and willing to support one another. A memo was sent to all families regarding a general meeting for anyone interested in participating.
In addition to competition teams, STEM concepts will be incorporated throughout the day for all students. OSES is proud to introduce a STEM class for all 6th grade students this year, in addition to the established K-5 STEM class. We have also added a Science Specialist, purchased additional robotics equipment, and have up to date curriculum in both science and math.
Lastly, hang in there during dismissal. We are constantly monitoring the progress of our new app PikMyKid.
Be safe,
Mr. Singleton

FIRST
In First Grade this week, we are finishing our community building and starting our academic learning!
Diving into Social Studies, we are identifying ways students can participate in the betterment of their school and community, how students can show respect and kindness to people and animals, and recognizing symbols and individuals that represent American constitutional democracy.
Reading will be focused on story structure, pinpointing the main elements of a story, as well as comparing and contrasting two texts on the same topic.
In writing, we are focusing on writing sentences with subjects and predicates with proper punctuation.
In Math, we are solving addition and subtraction real-world problems using objects, drawings or equations to represent the problem. The students are loving the Math manipulatives we were given with our curriculum!
Science this week was focused on investigating and observations. We are learning what it means to be a scientist, as well as becoming one ourselves!
Important Information:
All students in first grade have a take home folder and planner/agenda. Please check them daily.
Picture day is Monday.

The students will then write a paragraph that will include a thesis, evidence, and elaboration. In math we are learning about integers and negative numbers. In Science we are learning about the scientific process.

In Ms. Jung’s 6th grade math class, we have been working on classroom procedures and interacting with our new online curriculum. Students are already stepping up and allowing for a successful school year with our classroom leadership roles, student leadership notebooks, and following our 4Rs of Success.
Students have been working hard and answering those more in depth questions on only day 5! I am excited to challenge the students at OSS and see all the great things that are to come this year. Math and ELA F.A.S.T. will be taking place next week.
SPECIALS
In the K-5 STEM Lab, students have been learning about our new makerspace and created their names out of our building materials.
This year, the OSES P.E. department is using SPARK P.E. in our curriculum. SPARK is dedicated to creating, implementing, and evaluating researched-based programs that promote lifelong wellness. We have had a wonderful first week back in Physical Education. We have covered Rules, Policy, and Procedures and played two ice breaker games. We played a SPARK. game with grades k-2 called “I see, I see” (not pictured),. In grades 3-5 shown below students are warming up with relay races to prepare for our “4 corners fitness” SPARK activity. We're looking forward to our new school year and new curriculum.
