Why Focus on STEM?
PAsmart is focused on ensuring Pennsylvania students and workers have the skills and abilities to meet the economic needs of the 21st century. Careers in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) pathways are growing. In fact, STEM careers are growing at a much faster rate than other occupations over the past 10 years. According to the PA Workforce Needs Assessment 2016-2026, there will be 590,000 new and replacement jobs in Pennsylvania through 2026, with STEM jobs growing at over 9 percent. STEM, health, and business majors earn the highest salaries (PDF), with graduates earning an average annual wage of $37,000 or more at the entry level and an average of $65,000 or more annually over the course of their careers. Currently, there are 17,787 unfilled CS and software development jobs in Pennsylvania(PDF) with an average salary of $85,000. Only 23 percent of Pennsylvania’s middle and high schools offered computer science of any kind in 2016/2017; overall, only 2.1 percent of Pennsylvania students took a CS course. The PAsmart grant is looking to change that by expanding STEM and computer science opportunities available to our children.

National STEM Day
November 8 was the perfect day to innovate! Students at Maplewood Elementary participated in National STEM Day by creating, making and innovating this past Friday! Students from all around the building worked together on challenges created by their teachers using the design process. Students worked in groups to design, plan, build, test and redesign their creations. We learned lots about working together in groups and solving problems with our creativity! Special thanks to the Northwest Tri-County Intermediate Unit 5's STEM SQUAD for taking all of students at MES through a virtual tour with our Virtual Reality equipment! Having the equipment in our building was made possible through the PAsmart grant. Keep scrolling to check out photos from the day! #STEMinPA #CSforALL
