Unami United
May 8, 2017
Dear Unami Parents, Guardians & Students,
The faculty and staff of Unami would like to thank Unami parents for a delicious luncheon provided last Friday as a thank you during Teacher's and Staff Appreciation Week. All morning long tasty appetizers, entrees, salads, and sumptuous desserts arrived in our main office. Parent volunteers converted our Aux Gym into a luncheon cafe and served our staff during all three lunches. We thank all of our parents for their generosity and continued support!
As we wind towards the end of the school year, students are immersed in a wide array of curricular and extra-curricular activities. In just this past week students showed off their artistic and performance arts during our spring concerts and art show. Please join us for the last night of our performance arts on Wednesday, May 10.
We hope you enjoy our newsletter!

FINDING KIND
THE TEENAGE BRAIN, NATURAL HIGHS & TEAM BUILDING
Dr. James Stone from the Center for Neuropsychology and Counseling in Doylestown will be talking to the boys about the Teenage Brain. Adolescence is a period of tremendous growth and maturity, both physically, cognitively, emotionally and socially. In fact, at times it can be quite confusing and even scary! Dr. Stone will take the boys on a journey designed to help them understand these changes, know where they are in their development, normalize the experience and if needed, know when it is time to ask for help.
David Fialko, Prevention Specialist from the Council of SEPA will talk about "Natural Highs", introducing boys to the concept that they all have within themselves natural "feel good" chemicals that they can access to help them regulate their emotions and feel optimistic and positive about themselves and their life.
The third session of the day will be an interactive, physically invigorating and fun series of activities under the direction from trainers from the Doylestown YMCA. This session is designed to engage the boys mentally and physically and further develop their collaboration and Team-building skills.
INSTRUCTIONAL SPOTLIGHTS
This year, along with our newsletter, we will be "tweeting" out photos and 144 character descriptions of all the fabulous happenings in our community. You can easily filter these "tweets" by using the district's new CB Mobile App.
Mr. Swanson's 7th Grade Students Rely on Technology... And One Another!
7th grade students in Mr. Swanson's Technology and Engineering classes worked recently to create electrical circuits connected to wired remote controls. The remote would then trigger red light cues when controlled by a user. Students put their wired remotes to the test, installing the circuits/light board inside large cardboard boxes. One student put the box completely over their head (so they could only see the light cues), while their partner directed them through a sort of Morse Code procedure (e.g. 2 lights in row could translate to "turn right"). With Mr. Swanson running the timer, students worked together, using the Morse Code style procedure, to navigate an obstacle course. Grading was based on time, with "bumps" costing them 5 points apiece. Groups each had 3 tries for their grade.
I can report the all students in the class I observed achieved 90% or better!
Thanks, Mr. Swanson for always making learning fun!
WOMEN'S ENSEMBLE "ROARS"
Unami Held a Double-Header of Spring Arts & Music Festival Concerts
This past Tuesday and Thursday, Unami staged a double-header of Spring Arts & Music Festival concerts.
It all started on Tuesday, May 2 with an evening of music exclusively devoted to our Orchestra students. The evening was themed by "dance numbers" that have been composed throughout history, with student players providing the audience with an explanation of each piece prior to its performance. Musical numbers ranged from selections from Carmen to Van Morrison's Moondance. It was a lively and diverse evening of music.
Part 2 of the double-header occurred on Thursday, May 4, with a Band/Chorus featuring:
- 7th Grade Chorus
- 7th Grade Band
- Select Chorus
- Women's Ensemble
- Jazz Band
The audience was treated to yet another diverse evening of music, with numbers ranging from standards (e.g. Sippin' on Cider) to classic rock (e.g Smoke on the Water) to modern pop (e.g. Fight Song)
Both evening featured artwork produced by all grades throughout the 2016-2017 school year. Art was (and still is) displayed in the main hallway - portraits, clay art, pop art, still life... you name it. The art always makes our main hallway look fantastic!
A huge thanks to Mr. Bower, Ms. Jones, Ms. Leonardo, and Ms. Pak for their hard work and many hour of dedication working with the art music students to put on these performances!
8th Grade Math/Physics Trip a Success!
On Thursday, May 4, both 8th grade teams took a class trip up Route 309 to see the Philadelphia Phillies' Triple-A minor league team, the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs play a day game. The field trip had two components:
- It was an opportunity for an end of year team bonding activity
- Aspects of the game were connected to the math and science curriculums
Student groups were asked to work together on some math/science calculations (e.g. speed or a running based on time from home plate to first base; speed of a pitch from the mound to the batter) and other scientific factors (e.g. impact of weather conditions on the a pitch). Students had to take their calculations and draw conclusions, which gave their teachers an opportunity to assess many components of learning that occurred in their classes this year.
It was a truly beautiful day for a ball game with a beautiful result - The Iron Pigs defeated the Triple-A New York Yankees affiliate Scranton Railriders 5-3!
Thank you to our 8th grade teachers for organizer such a fun and educational trip!
Thank you to our 8th grade students for representing Unami with class and respect. You guys, rock!

If the student has incomplete immunizations and no medical plan, the student will be excluded from school.
You may check your child’s school immunization record by logging onto the parent portal through the district website at www.cbsd.org or by consulting with your child’s physician.
