COVID-19 Parent Update
Email Sent on July 2nd, 2020
Dear Norwalk-La Mirada Families,
I sincerely hope that you and your loved ones are doing well. As your new Superintendent, I am committed to communicating regularly about our return-to-school plans for the 2020-21 school year. As you know, the situation we face is ever-evolving as COVID-19 cases in the Los Angeles area have increased recently and the Governor has for the second time closed certain sectors of society. In addition, we are still awaiting the Los County Department of Public Health guidance/directives for reopening schools. While this guidance has not stopped us from actively planning, we will need to adhere to any applicable directives provided.
As you may know, we have formed a Return-to-School Task Force, comprised of over 50 stakeholders, including parents, teachers, support staff, and administrators. The Task Force has been actively meeting to discuss viable learning models and operational plans for the 2020-21 school year. Additionally, on Monday, June 29, 2020, our Board of Education passed a resolution authorizing the District to explore two possible learning models:
Hybrid Model: Students would attend school in person two days per week in smaller classes (with appropriate safety measures, such as symptoms-checks, physical/social distancing, and face masks, when appropriate) with possible modified start and end times. Students would learn from home under the Distance Learning model described below three days per week.
Distance Learning: Students who have health-related concerns and/or other concerns with returning in person would learn from home five days per week with support from a teacher and engage in a combination of online and independent work. We are currently preparing to revamp this model to embed curriculum that matches the essential learning standards that are provided to students in the hybrid model.
While we are still scheduled to start school on August 13, 2020, it is possible, that we will begin with all students engaging in Distance Learning to allow adequate time and necessary training of staff to prepare for the safe return of students.
We recognize that the uncertainty of the pandemic leaves all of us with many questions. Please rest assured that the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District is committed to ensuring the safety of students and staff and providing a high-quality education for all students.
I encourage you to continue visiting our website at www.nlmusd.org for regular updates. Thank you for your patience and partnership as we navigate this most unprecedented situation.
Have a safe 4th of July weekend!
Kind regards,
John M. Lopez
Superintendent
