5th Grade News
Happy February
Our 5th graders have been very busy. Two classes have already visited “Open Door” while the other two classes are eagerly awaiting their turn. In the gym we were lucky to be a part of the “Japan Project” where we learned about the games kids play in Japan. We just received our parts for our play Seussical the Musical Jr and can’t wait for rehearsals to begin. We are looking forward to our field trip to Barkalow to see their rendition of Frozen Jr. World Drumming and Singsation are in full swing and our after or before school activities such as Chess club, Intramurals and Graphic Design Club have been a blast.
As mathematicians, students have learned concepts related to place value, from reading, writing, and comparing decimals to rounding and examining the decimal patterns of multiplying and dividing numbers by 10. Students also used their place value understanding to convert within a measurement system, and they used both whole number strategies and place value understanding to add and subtract decimals to hundredths. Division has also been a focus, in which students modeled, solved, and posed long division problems. In addition, we have been exploring fractions and decimals and applying our knowledge through investigations of volume and surface area. Whether we are solving problems with pencil and paper, on the floor making models with cubes or participating in a workplace activity, we are highly engaged in mathematical thinking and conversations daily and loving it!!
In Language Arts our 5th graders have been busy reflecting on their lives while creating Memoirs. It has been so much fun learning about them and their life experiences while realizing lessons they have learned. We are so excited to begin our next unit on Literary Essay. Our #classroombookaday (CBAD) has really taken off and has led to some of the most incredible discussions. We are in our 3rd round of our “Battle of the Books” literature circles. We are loving the book choices and conversations.
During Social Studies we have been creating a Newspaper as if we were kids living during the American Revolution. We have been using our research skills to discover the different events. We look forward to travelling into our next unit: The Westward Expansion.
We are excited for what is to come in 5th grade…...
PTO Adopt a Class
Happy New Year!!! We hope everyone had an amazing holiday and break!
We are excited to launch our Adopt A Classroom!! Please see the link below for “Adopt A Classroom”. From this page you will be able to click on and view each individual teachers wish list for their classroom through signup genius.
Once you are in a teachers classroom on signup genius, you have the ability to click on the link for a particular item. This link is located directly under the teachers name and it will bring you to the store (like amazon) where you may purchase the items you wish. We also ask that you click the “sign up” button below the list of items, on signup genius, so that everyone knows what is still available for each teacher. If you choose to purchase the products at a different store, that is fine too…we just ask that you make sure to check off the “sign up” button for tracking of the products.
Some have reached out about just donating money towards the items needed for the classroom OR going in as a group for a bigger item…this is also amazing. If you would prefer to do this please send your money in an envelope (or via Venmo to @LauraDonovan-PTO) to the attention of "Pia Mariconda-Adopt a Classroom” along with your name AND the name of the teachers classroom you are donating to. We will then make sure your donation goes towards the purchase of items needed for the classroom of your choice.
Please feel free to contact either Pia Mariconda or Vita Briggs with any questions, concerns or suggestions. We are here to help in anyway.
We cannot thank you enough for your continued support and generosity. YOU are a big part of what makes our school and community one of the best around! We are extremely grateful for all of you!!
Thank you,
The PTO
