Jeffrey/Mead Team Blog
11/8-11/12
Math
Each day students participate in a Number Talk which are designed to help students become flexible, accurate and efficient when making calculations. The strategies we are teaching help students solve problems across all four operations. Right now Ms. Jeffrey's class is working on multiplication with partial products as well as halving and doubling. Mrs. Mead's class is is focusing on multiplication. We have used strategies such as halving and doubling, partial products, and landmark and friendly numbers.
Calendar Grid and Calendar Collector have also continued in classrooms. Students have been making connections between the work we do in Number Corner and the work we do in our unit lessons. This month Calendar Collector, "A Meter a Day", focuses on metric conversions. Each day they collect one more meter and calculate the number of centimeters, decimeters, dekameters and kilometers. For Calendar Grid, students are working with different types of triangles and determining their coordinates on a grid as well as the transformation of the shape.
We started Unit 2 this week! This week students focused on equivalence and magnitude of fractions. First students discussed how to determine if a fraction is closest to 0,1/2, or 1. Then we made the connection of reasoning about the magnitude of fractions and how that can help us with finding equivalent fractions. If students showed they did not need practice with equivalence they focused on probability.

Reading
Ms. Jeffrey's class are in the middle of another round of books, this time with a focus on identifying the most important event in each chapter. Along with that, we are reading Andrea Beatty picture books, such as Ada Twist Scientist, to study characters. The students are analyzing the characters using what they say and do as well as their thoughts and feelings. We are finding text evidence, including direct quotes to support the claims about the characters.
Mrs. Mead's students are continuing to work on their Jory John author study. We have read Giraffe Problems, The Bad Seed and The Good Egg this week. These books started our discussion around character change and trying to identify why a character changes.
Science
Ms. Jeffrey's class did a STEM activity with Google spreadsheets.
Mrs. Mead's class did a STEM activity making Google Sites to showcase their work. We will be wrapping our Matter unit up before break. After break we will be moving onto Social Studies.

Remote Learning and Quarantine
In the event that a classroom is sent home due to a COVID close contact, the classroom teacher will provide remote instruction for their class. This can be a combination of synchronous (at the same time, through zoom or google meet) and asynchronous (self-paced) learning experiences. Students will receive special education and intervention services as schedules allow as well. In the event that a student is sent home due to close contact in school or on the bus, but their entire class is not quarantining, remote instruction will not be provided. Practice links may be provided. The student’s absences will be excused. In the event that a student is sent home due to close contact outside of school and school-related activities, the classroom teacher is not expected to provide remote instruction. The student’s absences will be excused.
Student Technology Tools
The following is a list of online programs students may use this year. Others could be added as the year progresses. Individual student password documents will be shared with students. We will be send home a permission form regarding student technology programs in the first weeks of school.
