What are scholarships?
Scholarships are gifts. They do not need to be repaid. There are thousands of them, offered by schools, employers, individuals, private companies, nonprofits, communities, religious groups, and professional and social organizations.
What kinds of scholarships are available?
Some scholarships for college are merit-based. Merit scholarships are typically awarded on the basis of academic, athletic or artistic merit, in addition to special interests. Some merit scholarships also consider financial need, but rewarding talent is the primary objective. You earn them by meeting or exceeding certain standards set by the scholarship-giver. Other scholarships are based on financial need. Many scholarships are geared toward particular groups of people; for instance, there are scholarships for women or graduate students. And some are available because of where you or your parent work, or because you come from a certain background (for instance, there are scholarships for military families). A scholarship might cover the entire cost of your tuition, or it might be a one-time award of a few hundred dollars. Either way, it’s worth applying for, because it’ll help reduce the cost of your education.
Remember that best away to obtain scholarships is to apply to as MANY scholarships as possible! The more you apply, the more opportunties you will have to receive scholarships.
How to locate scholarships? Where do I start?
1) Make sure you complete your FAFSA- (Federal Government/Schools use this to provide grants and scholarships as well as student loans)
2) Complete CSS profile (Only if the school requires this application)
3) Get Organized: Scholarships ask for similar information that you would have provided schools through your college applications. You will need: transcripts, test scores, resume, a list of all your accomplishments, time to write essays, letters of recommendation, and financial aid information.
4) Apply! Apply! Apply!
-Begin with the scholarship website for the schools you were accepted to. Many schools email links to a scholarship portal for their school. Login and apply to the scholarships that you qualify for.
-Locate Scholarships:
-High school Counselor (I will announce scholarship as I receive them) ---
-Talk to family/Friends/employers/churches/organizations/clubsetc.
-Internet sources: Here are a few to get you started:
2) https://www.goodcall.com/scholarships/
3) bigfuture.collegeboard.org/
4) mappingyourfuture.org/paying/scholarshipresources.cfm
5) https://www.cfnc.org/pay-for-college/scholarship-search/
6) https://www.collegegreenlight.com/ https://myscholly.com/
7) Unigo.com/scholarships
8) Cappex.com

****When Searching for Scholarships remember to consider the unique aspects about yourself including but not limited to, your academic merit, if you played sports or if you are an athlete, the major you plan on studying in college, your ethnic or cultural background, your religious affliction, and your special interests, such as chess. You can use those aspects to search for scholarships. For example, if you are a Female and you plan to major in Math, you may find scholarship by searching “Scholarships for Female Math Majors.”****
****Warning***** A scholarship application should never ask for a fee to apply.
Avoid any scholarship that asks for application fees, search fees, or processing fees. Here is more information on how to avoid Scholarship scams: http://www.ftc.gov/scholarshipscams

Let's talk about SEL (Social-Emotional Learning)
What is social-emotional learning?
SEL is an acronym for social-emotional learning. According to the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning, it’s the process by which we learn and apply social-emotional knowledge, attitudes, and skills for understanding and managing emotions, setting and achieving goals, establishing and maintaining relationships, and feeling and showing empathy for others. The video below explains SEL in less than three minutes.
What are social-emotional skills?
Social-emotional skills are the strategies one has for managing strong emotions, navigating relationships, working effectively with others, solving difficult problems, and making responsible decisions.
Why are social-emotional skills a focus in school?
With social-emotional skills, young people can learn how to establish rewarding relationships with others, maintain meaningful relationships, and handle difficult social situations. They can manage times of high stress, and during times of anger, keep from launching into destructive actions they may regret later.
Connection to home
Take a look at our SEL home connection flyer for each grade level. Our scholars will be focusing on a different SEL skills during their CLC. These home connection flyers will be provided for your reference each month. September we are focusing on self-management. Each week scholars will have an opportunity to discuss and reflect on a skill related to self-management.
