Elective Course Selection for 6th and 7th Graders

By now, all 6th and 7th grade parents should have received communication about course selection. There is a slight change in process from previous years as we will not be sending home a form to be completed, signed and returned but moved it to an online form. Please review the information shared over email and complete the online Form by February 8th. This form will give us an idea of what electives your child is interested in and will aid us in building their next years schedule. If you have any questions after reviewing the information, please call Gregory Middle School’s student services office at 630-428-6302.

GMS Spelling Bee

Spelling Bee has been rescheduled for Monday, February 4 from 3:15 to 5:30 p.m. The Bee will take place in the LMC. Please see Ms. Cimms with any questions

GMS Empowerment Events Need Your Help

BAM (Becoming AMAZING Men)

Friday, March 8, 2019 5:30-9pm

POWer (POWERFUL Outstanding Women)

Saturday, April 13, 2019 8-1pm

GMS event coordinators and the PTA are looking for your help! We are working together to plan both the BAM & POWer empowerment events. We are seeking SPEAKERS, EVENT SPONSORS, RAFFLE PRIZE DONATIONS, AND FOOD DONATIONS for both events. We are also looking for any parents/guardians that want to volunteer. If you own your own business or work for a corporation that is committed to inspiring young teens to be confident, kind, compassionate, active members in their communities, please let us know how you can get involved.

Both BAM & POWer are FREE events for Gregory Middle School students and their adult guests. They are designed to inspire and empower our students to believe in themselves, discover their unique gifts and talents, develop courage to stand up for their beliefs, see the benefits of working as a team, empower them to be responsible and active members of society and to increase their self-confidence.

Gregory and our community will come together to plan a fun filled day of activities for Gregory students and the special adults in their lives. Students and their guests will participate in FUN hands-on activities led by community business leaders and professionals. Students and their guests will have opportunities to learn about what their community has to offer them outside the classroom, win amazing raffle prizes and have fun together! You can find more details about each event on their websites and

Please contact the GMS Coordinators with any questions or suggestions.

Monitoring & Setting Clear Expectations

It is important for parent to explore the idea of monitoring and communicating clear expectations with your teens when it comes to talking about not using alcohol. Use the winter issue of our latest newsletter, The Parent Post, middle school edition, to help you guide you. For more information visit:

PowerTalk for Families: Strategies for Being a Positive Influence on your Peers

Peer behavior, both positive and negative, has a powerful influence on adolescent decision-making. When adolescents associate with positive social peers, they are more likely to engage in healthy behaviors and make responsible decisions. Talking about friendships/ relationships in general makes it easier to also talk about not using alcohol and the impact that underage drinking could have. Use this month’s PowerTalk for Families to help you talk with your teen about being a positive peer influence and making the healthy decision to not use alcohol.

GMS Social Emotional Learning with Second Step - Next Week's Lesson Home Connection

Lesson 15

Family Lesson Summary

This week, your child will explore how thoughts affect decision making and how to recognize and handle the unhelpful thoughts that may lead your child to make bad decisions.

Family Lesson Questions

6th Grade: Ask your child to tell you the difference between thoughts and emotions and to describe what an unhelpful thought is. Talk with your child about what to do if an unhelpful thought gets stuck in his or her head.

7th Grade: Ask your child about a time he or she remembers having a negative thought that wouldn’t go away. Decide together what kinds of actions your child would like to take the next time he or she has an unhelpful thought.

8th Grade: Ask your child about a time he or she felt rejected, and how that made him or her feel. Ask what kinds of unhelpful thoughts people can have when they feel rejected, and think of people your child can go to for help if he or she experiences thoughts like that.

CHECK OUT PARENTEENCONNECT.ORG, a free website for parents and their teens created by the makers of the Second Step Program, is a great resource for middle school families. It provides expert advice and practical tools for dealing with real parent-teen issues.
