Qualifying for the Gifted Program

What Parents and Students need to Know

Maybe my child is gifted....Now what?

  • A student can be referred for gifted evaluation by: A Parent, a teacher, a counselor, an administrator, a peer, or by the student himself
  • Once referred there are due process steps which must be followed:
  1. Referral
  2. Referral Team Meeting
  3. Parental Consent to Test
  4. Evaluation
  5. Elgibility Team Meeting
  6. Parental Consent to Place

Evaluation - Tests that may be administered include:

· Mental abilities

– Grades K – 12:

• CogAT, OLSAT, NNAT2

· Achievement

– Grades K – 8:

• ITBS

– Grades 2 – 12:

• Terra Nova

– Grades 6 – 12:

• SAT, PSAT, ACT

– Grades K – 12:

• Portfolios

· Creativity

– Grades K – 8:

• PCA, Gifted Rating Scale

– Grades 9 – 12:

• Renzulli/Hartman Creativity Scale

– Grades K – 12:

• TTCT or Portfolios

· Motivation

– Grades K – 8:

• Gifted Rating Scale

– Grades 4 – 8:

• CAIMI

– Grades 9 – 12:

• Renzulli/Hartman Motivation Scale

– Grades K – 12:

• Grade/Subject Acceleration or Portfolios

Using the Scores from above there are 2 ways for students to Qualify

The Psychometric Option


Mental Abilities

– Composite Score Only

– Grades K - 2 = 99%ile

– Grades 3 – 12 ≥ 96%ile

Achievement

– Total Reading, Total Math OR Composite

– Grades K-12 ≥ 90%ile

Creativity

ANY SCORE

Motivation

ANY SCORE

The Multiple Criteria Option


Mental Abilities

– Verbal, Quantitative, OR Composite

– Grades K – 12 ≥ 96%ile

Achievement

– Total Reading, Total Math OR Composite

– Grades K – 12 ≥ 90%ile

Creativity

– Grades K – 12 ≥ 90%ile

Motivation

– Grades K – 12 ≥ 90%ile

– Grades 6 – 12

NGA ≥ 90%

GPA ≥ 3.50

Important Facts

Gifted Testing can be done only once during each time period.

– Grades K – 2

– Grades 3 – 5

– Middle School

– High School

Test Scores

– Are Valid for 2 years

– Must be Administered by an accredited school

Reciprocity

– With other school systems in the State of Georgia
