March 2022
Longfellow Elementary
Notes from Mrs. Heckenlaible....
It doesn’t seem possible that we are already looking at “springing” our clocks ahead. Daylight Saving Time, March 13th, is fast approaching, so don’t forget to turn your clocks ahead an hour.
Thank you for attending parent/teacher conferences on February 3rd. We always look forward to meeting with each of you and sharing the learners’ highlights and academic successes. We had a great turnout, and it was so wonderful to be able to see so many of you in person this year!
All 3rd-5th grade learners will take part in the South Dakota Smarter Balance Testing in April. Please try to avoid scheduling any appointments or school absences during the testing dates. We appreciate your help and the encouragement you can provide your child. Please watch for more detailed information to come from your child/ren’s teacher.
We have a lot of dates to remember coming up so please read that section of the newsletter carefully.
We had excellent participation in our One School One Book project: Because of Winn Dixie. Our Lions were so eager to view the guest reader videos and be a part of this community-based reading project. A special thank you to our Title I teachers: Mrs. Gubbrud, Mrs. Schramm, and Miss Meyers for organizing our first ever event. We are looking forward to hosting another OSOB project in the future.
Think Spring!

Habits of Mind
- Applying Past Knowledge to New Situations - Use What You Learn! Using what you already know about the content taps into your memory bank of learning. In the same way, paying attention to what you know about the process of learning can also be helpful. For example, you may remember how you solved a problem or learned a new skill. Your transfer of that learning to a new situation builds your intellectual muscles. Ask yourself; "What does this remind me of?" "How is this just like the time when I...?".
- Remaining Open to Continuous Learning - Learn Throughout Your Lifetime! We all have something to learn. We never stop! Be open to learning new things. Ask questions if you don't know. Learn from those around you. Investigate what you don't understand.
