From The Principal
We appreciate the excellent attendance at our parent information night last evening. We are so fortunate to have such involved families! Next Tuesday we will have our first site council meeting starting at 6:00pm and our first PTO meeting following at 7:00pm. We hope to see you at these events.
As I stated at parent information night, we are currently developing a plan to tweak our dismissal process in order to insure student safety during this time of day. We are currently in the planning phase and will make sure we communicate any changes before they happen.
Just a friendly reminder our doors open at 8:20am. We have several students arriving by 8:00am. There is no adult supervision until 8:20. However, Boys and Girls club is available starting at 7:00am. Please contact the school if you would like to sign up.
Finally, staff has been working really hard to build relational capacity with and among all scholars. Check out some of the pictures below highlighting these efforts!

From The Counselor
Hello Sunflower families! I wanted to let you all know what your student/s are learning about when we are teaching our social/emotional curriculum. The curriculum we use is called Positive Action.
During the end of August & throughout September, all students in K-5 are learning about self-concept. The curriculum is designed to be developmentally appropriate across elementary grades. The students are learning the definition, formation, and importance of self-concept.
You may reinforce with your student/s that self-concept is ³the way you think about yourself.² Students learn that family, friends, and other students influence these feelings, but they also learn that they are each unique and special and in control of their own choices. When they make positive choices and actually do positive actions, they feel good about themselves.
Some of the terminology we are using when discussing self-concept include:
a. Positive Action: to do or cause good things to happen.
b. Self-Concept: how you feel about yourself.
c. Valuable: precious or of great worth.
d. Happiness: to feel good about who you are and what you do.
e. Unique: to be one of a kind.
f. Success: to feel good about who you are and what you do.
Students learn the basic principle that positive thoughts lead to positive feelings and positive feelings lead to positive actions, which in turn lead to further positive thoughts. The positive circle (thoughts - actions - feelings) is the basis for happy, healthy lives. By contrast, negative thoughts begin a circle of negativism that works against happiness.
If you have any questions, please just let me know. You may contact me, Julie Heatwole, school counselor, at #785-330-4860 or jheatwol@usd497.org . Thank you!
