A Message From the Principal
It's hard to believe that we will be wrapping up the year virtually. With so many unknowns, my hope is that you are comforted by the fact that the teachers and I will be with you every step of the way to support you and your children through eLearning. Please know we will work very hard to make sure there are no gaps in your child's education. Teachers and I are already planning for how we will make up for the time we have lost when we return to school next year. There will be teaching and reteaching next year as we strive for mastery in those key 4th quarter concepts we are working with you to teach. We are committed to communicating with the next grade level to individually document each child's progress. I can assure you that no one will slip through our "academic cracks."
Please try to keep up with the daily lessons and check in with your child's teacher. If you need anything, let your child's teacher, our counselor, or me know how we can help. Most importantly ask your children to read. The DOE has put out some great weekly family Continuous Learning Challenges that your teachers will be sharing, but I want to share the first week with you. See the document below. The activities are designed by grade level with the 4Cs in mind as well as two others (Content Knowledge, Communication, Creativity, Critical Thinking, Collaboration and Character). They are meant for children to try on their own. It is okay if your child asks for help with some of the activities; it is a challenge! Please share any examples of the completed challenges to social media tagging @EducateIN.
It is during this time of year that I typically begin to receive inquires about whether parents can request a teacher for their children for next school year. Just as this has been in the past, we do NOT accept teacher requests. However, I feel strongly that you know your child best and may have information that would be helpful in finding the best placement. If you have shared information in the past about your child, I ask that you resubmit concerns again because each year is fresh start. What may have been a concern two years ago may no longer be a concern or there might be something you want me know. You are welcome to send me a short letter detailing what you know about your child. All such letters should come to my attention via email at jthacker@plainfield.k12.in.us by Friday, May 1st.
Submission of this information in no way guarantees a particular placement; there are many factors that go into dividing students into classrooms. Many students are able to learn and grow effectively with a variety of teachers' styles and because we have such an outstanding staff, most students could be placed anywhere and thrive!
Although we are talking encouragingly about next year, we will continue to remain focused on the great deal of eLearning which will happen over the next two months. Since our partnership is very important to me, please let me know if there is anything I can do to support you in your child's education.
We know these are difficult times for many and don't want to minimize the added challenge of eLearning. Through all of this our goal at Central Elementary is to love our families, be supportive and extend grace.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding anything in the newsletter, please give me a call or email me.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Julie Thacker

Parents, It's Okay!
As I think about you working with your child's teacher and your child, these words from Mr. Fred Rogers come to mind.

Other Information Regarding Items at School
I understand the questions that these "knowings" bring up, and I wish I had answers for you. However, with so much still being up in the air and no timeline yet in place as a "finish line" for our current social distancing restrictions, we will simply have to wait to answer those questions and determine a game plan for all of these things as the timeline becomes more clear. I appreciate your patience and I am ever grateful to have your partnership in this unexpected turn of events as we finish out the school year. Thank you for continuing to wait with us, to work with us, and to involve yourself in aspects of your child's school life that you never thought would be necessary. Together, we will continue to make this the best end of the school year that we possibly can.
Kindergarten Round-Up and Registration
- We will share a Sign-Up Genius so you can select your time to come to the school
- Bring your registration documents
- Your child's kindergarten assessment will take place at this time
Please know that our plan is to create an experience for our newest students to visit their new school, meet their principal and teachers. Stay tuned for further information on future round-up dates and screenings.
