Moses Austin, founder of the American lead industry and the first man to obtain permission to bring Anglo-American settlers in to Spanish Texas, son of Elias and Eunice (Phelps) Austin.

Moses Austin was one of the biggest empresarios. He was in the fifth generation of his line of Austins in America. Moses Austin abandoned his fathers accupations of tailor, farmer, and tavern keeper, Moses at 21 entered the dry-goods buisness in Middletown Connecticut, then moved to Philadelphia Pennsylvania, in 1783 to join his brother, Stephen,in a similar undertaking.

What Moses Austin did?


Austin sought to start his own mining business in Southwestern Virginia and in 1789 he traveled to to southwest Virginia to look at lead mine site. Austin became founder and principle stockholder in the bank of St. Louis but the bank failed in panic of 1819 causing him to lose all his money and entire fortune. Austin got help from Spain and he planned to colonize Texas with Anglo Americans ( the white people ), the govener rejected Austins plan due to the ongoing Attacks on Texas by American filibusters.

So that he could get his fortune back that he lost in the panic of 1819.
