Classroom Happenings
ELA- Mr. Jones
We have continued the work with the novel Refugee this week, as we have focused on minor characters and their perspectives. Each main character in the novel have important people associated with them that help drive the stories. This week was also our first trip to the school library as a class. This was important since starting next week, we will begin with our monthly reading goal of completing three books a month. Students should always have a good book with them, not just for ELA, but in other classrooms to read if they finish their work early. Students should continue to read at home for 25-30 minutes at least five days a week. This will help them achieve the monthly goal. For September, all students will be able to use Refugee as a completed book, which means students only need to read two independent books. You and students can view this week’s mini-lessons here.
Science- Mrs. Creath
We have begun our Space unit! This past week students took a pre-test for our Space unit. We then began brainstorming ideas & concepts about Space. Students came up with questions about space they would like to answer. Next week we will spend a day on space vocabulary & then the students will begin working on a research project.
Social Studies- Mrs. Pettid
Students have been wrapping up the Foundations Unit this week. We’ve spent time on Historical Thinking Skills, Understanding Timelines, Recognizing Cause and Effect, and Determining Fact from Opinion. Finally, on Thursday students took their Foundations Vocabulary Test and completed a writing prompt. Next week, we will begin our Geography Unit.
