Knightly Update August 16, 2020
Edition Vol 9 Issue 4
Good morning. I hope everyone had a nice week and you were able to take some time to watch the Meet the Teacher videos prepared by our staff. If you haven't yet had the time to do so, please know these videos will remain available for families to view when convenient. I want to thank our teachers for putting together their remarks and for sharing information about their class.
On Wednesday, August 13, an email was sent sharing the instructional guidelines that will begin Monday. For your convenience, this information is included in this week's update. Please ensure your child has read this update and is aware of the times to log in to their various classes to review the instructional structure for the class. If students have any questions, they should contact the appropriate instructor.
Included in Wednesday's email was information regarding the opportunity for students to utilize school WiFi if needed. Information about this opportunity and a registration sign up are included in today's update. Please know that teachers will NOT be available to work with on-campus students during these times. Students who register to come to campus to use school WiFI will be monitored by our security personnel or other staff members, but not teaching faculty as they will be teaching their classes during these times. In addition, lunch and transportation ARE NOT provided. Students will need to provide their own transportation to/from school and bring a lunch if desired. Please read more about this opportunity below.
I appreciated seeing a few of our students as they picked up their textbooks last week. If you did not pick up your child's textbooks during our textbook distribution days, it is important that you contact Mrs. Laura Arceo or call (480) 424-8014 to arrange for a time to do so as soon as possible. It is important that all students have the textbooks needed to help them learn and master material this quarter. A huge thank you to Mrs. Arceo for coordinating last week's textbook distribution days.
As we head into the third week of the school year, it is my hope to limit administrative emails to Sunday's Knightly Update only. I know how burdensome and overwhelming numerous emails become, and I will do all I can to limit school-wide communications appropriately. Please understand present circumstances often dictate an email be sent, but I will work to limit these occurrences to the best of my ability.
I hope you have a very good week. If you have any questions, please contact me. As a school community, we are here for you, so if you need anything or have questions, please contact me, office staff, or the appropriate instructor. I look forward to seeing our students in their virtual classes throughout the week and appreciate the effort our entire school community is putting forth at this time. Have a great week, everyone. Go KNIGHTS!!

Knights in the Spotlight
Thank you to bookstore manager Laura Arceo for coordinating last week's textbook distribution. She, along with the support of staff members Shawn Curbello, Eve Lopez, Jacqueline McCaulou, Zach Webb, and Roslyn Wilson, developed a very smooth process for distributing textbooks to our students. It was a huge task and they all put forth incredible team effort. We appreciate all they did to accomplish this task and distribute books to our students. Great work!
Important Virtual Learning Attendance Updates
Reporting your child’s attendance for virtual learning is not much different than on-campus learning.
Reporting Your Students Absence: If your student is unable to attend class for the day, or for a period of time during the day, you will need to call the ACP-Erie Attendance Line at 480-424-8003 to report your student’s absence.
- Contacting a teacher will NOT substitute for notifying the office. You must call the Attendance Line to report each absence (for the day or specific period).
When do I Report an Absence: Ideally your call to report your students absence should be done first thing in the morning (between 6:00am – 8:00am), so that their attendance is documented for teachers to see. If you call out your student later than 8:00am their attendance will be documented in a timely manner for teacher knowledge.
Reporting a Late Absence: Parents must call the Attendance Line (480-424-8003) within 24 hours of a student’s absence from school.
Unreported Absence: If your student did not engage in ‘live’ distance learning and we have not heard from the student’s parent/guardian, they will be marked as an ‘unexcused’ absent. If your student completes & submits “said teacher assignment” (this may be different by class) within 48 hours, the ‘unexcused’ absence will be changed once the teacher submits a request to the Attendance office. This attendance change may take up to 24 hours based on the time of submission by the teacher.
Technical Difficulties: Should your student encounter a technical issue, i.e.: WiFi, and is unable to participate in the ‘live’ Distance Learning class period, the parent/guardian will need to email the students teacher(s) and Cc the Attendance Tech., mccaulou.jacqueline@cusd80.com, sharing that the student is having technical issues. Attendance will note that a technical issue has occurred and that the student cannot participate for the current class period or day.
For additional attendance information and to familiarize yourself with CUSD & ACP Attendance Policies, visit the ACP Erie attendance website.
ACP-Erie Instructional Changes Beginning August 17
As shared in previous school updates, the instructional structure employed at our school will change slightly beginning Monday, August 17. The most significant change surrounds the start time and duration of each class. Please download the attached document to review the daily class schedule that students will follow and review the corresponding examples of how the instructional period might look. Understand the shared lesson designs are simply examples of what students might see and not necessarily what they will see. Teachers have the flexibility to design lessons to best meet the needs of the students, class, the curriculum, and their instructional preferences.
Students will need to be prepared to log in to the appropriate class at the start of every instructional period to review the structure for the day's lesson via the Google Classroom Stream. Teachers will share updates, the lesson structure for the day, and announce the start time for live sessions. From there, students should follow the structure as directed by their instructor. Please reach out to your instructors if you have any questions.
On-Site Technology Support Available
- Supervision will be provided by campus security personnel; no direct instruction or personal interactions with teaching faculty will be provided.
- Students may access CUSD guest Wifi and should bring a CUSD issued device or personal device.
- Enrollment is capped at 10 students.
- Transportation is not provided.
- Face coverings are required and social distancing is enforced.
- Enhanced sanitation procedures will be implemented.
A signed Parent Acknowledgment Form MUST be completed in order for a student to participate. Failure to complete the form will result in denying your child entrance onto the campus. Please download and complete this form and ensure your child brings it with them if they elect to participate in this opportunity.
Dual Enrollment Opportunities for ACP-Erie Students
Welcome to Arizona College Prep-Erie and Dual Enrollment! Dual Enrollment (DE) offers students the ability to earn college credits while taking a high school course. Dual Enrollment courses are held on our campus and are taught by ACP-Erie instructors who have met community college hiring qualifications. Dual Enrollment also eases the transition from high school to college and increases the number of college-bound high school students in our community. CGCC partners with East Valley high schools to offer Dual Enrollment credit for academic and occupational classes.
We are excited for the upcoming year and all the class offerings we have for ACP-Erie students.
Below are the classes that are eligible for Dual Enrollment credit at ACP-Erie. Please check your existing schedule to see which courses are eligible for college credit.

Class of 2021 Senior Pictures
OPTION 1: Schedule an appointment to have your photo taken at the Mesa studio with Lou Coopey before September 1st. (Please see page 2 for more information.)
- To do so, go to www.loucoopey.com then click on the large red banner across the top to book your appointment. To ensure the safety of all seniors we have put in place new COVID protocols for the photo session.
- Social distancing, masks, and hand sanitizing will be required of all customers and staff. All procedures will be as contact-free as possible.
- Dressing rooms, rest rooms and seating areas will be closed to the public.
- Only seniors, six at a time, with appointments will be permitted to enter the studio. No one else may accompany them.
- All studio services beyond the sitting: scheduling, ordering and paying fees will be conducted online.
- A $40 deposit will be collected at the time of scheduling. This, along with a $10 complimentary coupon will be applied to each account, giving each senior a $50 credit toward the purchase of portraits and services. After 30 days, the $10 complimentary credit will expire. The $40 remains on account and can be used for any senior portrait purchase.
- Senior sessions will include 9-14 poses on a variety of backgrounds.
- The studio will not provide the usual loaner jackets, ties, shirts and drapes. Seniors will be required to come wearing the school-prescribed dress for senior portraits.
- All post-sitting contact will be done online, including choosing the yearbook pose, ordering and any payment. Each senior will receive an online access code for their images and $50 credit. • Cap & gown photos for graduation included. They are sanitized on site in commercial dryers between appointments per CDC sanitation requirements.
OPTION 2 (does not include cap & gown): Take senior yearbook photo on campus during School Picture Day (date TBD). For those who do not pick Option 1, we will have an on-campus photo day. This option does not allow for cap & gown photos.
- Students must be dressed professionally when they arrive at school that day. This includes a collared shirt with tie and dress shirts, suit coats, dresses, blouses, or other more formal dress.
- There will be one campus day. If you miss it and want your photo in the yearbook, we refer you back to Option 1.
Seniors may not wear jeans, shorts or t-shirts in their yearbook photo. This is formal attire. No casual attire is permitted. All seniors will take a sitting and standing picture that will both be in the yearbook. Boys must be in business casual or formal attire wearing pants and a button-up shirt. Jacket and tie are optional. Girls may be in slacks, a skirt or a dress no shorter than knee-length. Tops cannot be off the shoulder or spaghetti strap. You may not bring props or pets to your photo session due to the current restrictions of COVID-19.
