A Publication of the Affton School District
Update for Families | July 25, 2020
An Important Message from Dr. Bracht
What We Know:
In-Person Learning will begin in 100% Distance Learning at home for the 1st Quarter.
This decision does not affect students opting for the Online or Online Plus Learning options.
From Melissa Mendoza, Affton Education Association (AEA) president: “The AEA endorses the district’s plan to begin the school year in 100% Distance Learning at home. We believe this is the safest course of action to protect not only our teachers and staff but our students as well.”
The first day of school for all students will be Monday, August 24, 2020.
Distance Learning is not the same as the Continuation of Learning, which was a response to an immediate crisis last spring.
Students will not face 6 straight hours of screen time.
There will be set times for direct instruction, small group or individual instruction, and then independent work time.
Not all independent work will be on the computer, some time will be spent reading and practicing skills in other ways.
All assignments and standards will be covered just like in-person.
Flexibility will be key. Video recordings of any direct instruction will be available for students and parents to access at a time that works best for their family.
Student attendance will be tracked.
Online assignments and assessments will be graded.
As we move forward, our decision-making will remain guided by health, safety, equity in learning, science, and the many needs of our stakeholders in the midst of a dangerous global pandemic.
What We Don't Know...Yet
Health conditions will be reevaluated prior to the end of 1st Quarter on October 23 in the hopes that a Fixed Blended schedule would be possible.
Daily schedules by school or grade level will be made available in August.
Childcare will be a real need for many of our families. We are hoping our community will help us wrap our arms around solving this challenge together.
Affton Early Childhood will move forward with in-person programming at reduced capacity with additional health and safety guidelines in place. More information to come.
DEADLINE IS SUNDAY: It's Still Important to Choose Your Learning Option
FAMILIES DO STILL NEED TO CHOOSE A LEARNING OPTION so that their student(s) will be assigned to an In-Person or Online classroom or cohort.
This week, families can choose how your student (grades K-12 only) will attend Affton School District by selecting a learning option: In-Person, Online, or Online Plus. Please log in to the Parent Portal and indicate your learning choice and transportation need for each child in your family by THIS SUNDAY, July 26, 2020.
Families of returning Affton School District students who do not select an option for each of their students by July 26, 2020, will be automatically enrolled in In-Person Learning and will be opted out of bus transportation.
- Log into the Parent Portal on a computer or tablet; it does not work well on cell phones.
- As a reminder, be sure you are on the Parent Tab. Your email address is your login name, and you can click Forgot Password for it to be sent to you.
