A Message from the Superintendent
We part with February, 2023 this week and welcome March and the official first day of spring in a few weeks on Monday, March 20. The recent wintery weather will continue this week with high temperatures expected to only reach 53 degrees until Thursday and Friday, when sunny conditions and highs in the mid-60's are expected. Rain is in the forecast on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday during parts of the day. Look for messages from your principal with inclement weather modifications to the normal school day.
CELEBRATING BLACK EXCELLENCE
Alvord partnered with the organization, Empower You Edutainment to create a memorable event held this past Wednesday. The event, Celebrating Black Excellence, honored the history of African American voices, trailblazers, innovators, and achievers and recognized our own African American district leaders, including administrators Confidence Johnson (Arlanza Elementary); LaShonda Owens (Human Resources); Carmen Phillips (Extended Learning); Dr. Chad Freeman (Student Services); and Strawn Holmes (La Sierra High School).
Theatrical performances included song, dance, poetry, drama, and storytelling. The event was coordinated by Dr. Sharon Bennett (McAuliffe Elementary). It was a powerful evening filled with rich history, faith, hope, and resiliency.
LA SIERRA HIGH SCHOOL OFFICIALLY OPENS NEW CULINARY ARTS BUILDING
This past Thursday, we held a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony to officially open the "Eagles Nest Cafe" and the new Culinary Arts building at La Sierra High School. The Culinary Arts Academy is one of many college and career pathway programs in Alvord. Culinary Arts is part of the Hospitality, Tourism, & Recreation Sector Pathway. Interesting in learning more about the pathway program and the courses offered? Get on the mailing list here and explore the possibilities, take a tour, and see first hand why the program is so popular.
The Hospitality, Tourism, and Recreation Pathway provides students with the academic and technical preparation necessary to pursue high-skill, high-demand careers in these related and growing industries. The sector encompasses three distinct, yet interrelated, career pathways: Food Science, Dietetics, and Nutrition; Food Service and Hospitality; and Hospitality, Tourism, and Recreation. The standards are designed to integrate academic and career technical concepts. The knowledge and skills students will acquire are sequential and integrate hands-on projects, work-based instruction, and leadership development such as that offered through Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA). Standards in this sector pathway are designed to prepare students for advanced technical training, college, and/or entry to a career.
ANNUAL SPRING FESTIVAL IS JUST THREE WEEKS AWAY
If you attended this event last year you know how much fun it is for kids and adults alike! The event is on the campus of La Sierra High School on Saturday, March 18, from 11 am to 2 pm. It's for the entire community.
SCHOOL SAFETY WEEKLY UPDATE
While our Measure J priority is squarely focused on safety-related facility upgrades to safeguard against human threats, including perimeter fencing, video surveillance, and emergency response systems, campus safety extends beyond human threats and includes environmental threats. Our Measure J priority related to environmental threats focuses on our outdoor spaces, including playgrounds and play spaces, fields, and shade structures. We aspire to create sustainable, healthy, resilient, and equitable outdoor learning environments. Stay tuned to this space for regular updates related to Measure J safety projects.
