"As Congress contemplates a fourth piece of legislation to respond to the coronavirus,
Missouri’s Sen. Roy Blunt has an opportunity to advocate for these students as chairman of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies, which funds education. Now Missouri’s educators need his help to ensure that our neediest students — those experiencing homelessness — are not forgotten." --Dr. Eric Johnson, Principal, Winnetonka HS, North Kansas City Schools. Eric is also the Jim L. King Missouri High School Principal of the Year. Eric's quote was in today's Kansas City Star this morning in the Guest Editorial section. Dear Colleague,
GROUNDHOG DAY
Happy Friday! It’s Groundhog Day. Every day feels the same right now. We have to remember that we are one day closer to this crazy time ending. Even though we have had traditions interrupted, we have many reasons to remain optimistic while finding new ways to carry on celebrations during our separations.
Find some ways next week to celebrate student leaders in your school. Click on the link to take you to a plethora of activates, resources, and social media ideas.
LEGISLATIVE UPDATE
All MoASSP members should have received the latest Legislative Bulletin this afternoon. The legislature will recommence April 27. Find some time to review the Bulletin and stay informed. It is suggested that you reach out to your legislator and share how you have spent the last few weeks.
CONTRACTS
As you know, the Governor has extended the statutory deadlines for notifying and providing contracts to teachers and administrators by 30 days. The Governor ordered that certificated employees must be notified by May 15 if their contract will (or will not) be renewed, and they must receive a contract no later than June 14. We anticipate a rough budget year coming up. Be aware of your rights and read your contract thoroughly.
As I mentioned last week, time continues to be our friend right now. Use it in ways that will better yourself and your family. Have a GREAT weekend.

National Student Leadership Week (NSLW) is an annual theme-based week dedicated to recognizing and supporting the vital role of student leaders. Since its origin stemming from a U.S. Presidential proclamation in 1972, NSLW has been a national celebration of students sponsored by National Honor Society, National Junior Honor Society, and National Student Council. Read more and find out about suggested activities and resources.
TOP EDUCATION GROUPS MET MARCH 11 TO DISCUSS MENTAL HEALTH
Before the world shut down because of COVID-19, ten influential education groups in Missouri met March 11 at the Missouri State High School Activities Association building to talk about mental health challenges facing schools. The purpose of the one-day event was to identify:
- Top issues educators are seeing around mental health.
- Begin to identify the critical issues around mental health.
- Activate networks to address the issue of mental health.
The event was facilitated by members of the International Center for Leadership in Education (ICLE) team. Dr. Adam Drummond and Kyra Donovan guided the group through a series of activities. The following groups were represented: AFT, MAESP, MASA, MNEA, MoASSP, MSBA, MSTA, PTA, MSCA, and MSHSAA.

26TH ANNUAL MISSOURI SCHOLARS 100 CLASS OF 2020 ANNOUNCED
For the past 26 years, MoASSP has been the proud sponsor of the acclaimed Missouri Scholars 100 Celebration of Learning. Although the ceremony scheduled for April 26 has been postponed, the recognition of a select group of Missouri's most capable high school seniors continues. Both the scholars and honorable mention Class of 2020 are recognized for exceptional scholarship, citizenship, and reliability. This program wouldn't be possible without the generous support of Jostens. CLICK HERE FOR MISSOURI SCHOLARS. CLICK HERE FOR HONORABLE MENTION. We are considering other options to recognize the Class of 2020 Scholars. Stay tuned.
