Cultivate Virtual Academy Expands to K - 12
Thursday night, June 17th, the Chief Academic Officer met with families who were interested in the opportunity for a virtual learning option for grades K-12 in the 2021-2022 school year known as the Cultivate Virtual Learning Academy. Students willing to meet the program’s expectations and wishing to learn in a virtual setting can apply to Shelby County Public Schools (SCPS) Cultivate Virtual Learning Academy.
SCPS has offered virtual learning opportunities for students in grades 6-12 through Cultivate Virtual Learning Academy since 2016. Additionally, during this past 2020-2021 school year, all students were provided an option of SCPS@Home if the family was not comfortable with students returning to in-person learning due to COVID-19. Throughout this time, our leaders and staff have grown in the instructional delivery for all students attending school in a virtual setting. Therefore, we are ready to expand the Cultivate program.
The Cultivate Virtual Learning Academy is an independent learning pathway offered through SCPS, available to all students living in our district. For grades K-5, students will work alongside a certified classroom teacher from the district while at home; this will consist of a fixed schedule of morning and afternoon online meetings as well as flexible time to apply their learning in both digital and non-digital ways. Students in grades 6-12 will use an independent, online curriculum called Apex Learning (apexlearning.com). It is important to emphasize that all K-12 students in Cultivate must have consistent access to reliable, high-speed Internet.

Expectations of a successful elementary Cultivate student:
Meet online at certain scheduled times each day.
Follow district attendance policy; virtual attendance will be taken throughout each instructional day.
Manage and use online digital tools. This will include, but not be limited to, a learning management system like Google Classroom and adaptive learning systems like Lexia Core5 and DreamBox.
Follow certified teacher instructions and directions, including assigned deadlines.
Attend in-person for required assessments.
Expectations of a successful middle school or high school Cultivate student:
Complete daily assignments independently.
Meet with Advisor weekly (virtually or in-person).
Create and implement a set daily schedule in order to maintain course pacing.
Attend in-person for required assessments.
Finally, the most important factor of your student’s success in Cultivate is the partnership between you and our staff! In such a highly independent program, it is essential that parents communicate with the advisor or teacher, and ensure that students are completing daily assignments and learning tasks.
