We are excited to announce that, after several years of being virtual, the Art Show will return to an in-person format in 2023. Even more thrilling is Business Owner of EOS Cafe and Coffee House's Tony Zarife has graciously offered to host our art during the month of March. We recently met with Manager Hillary Knapp to begin planning this immersive art experience!

Approximately 20 pieces, 100 in total, will be displayed from each building, hand-selected based on exemplary skills, creativity, and innovative ideas including Scholastic award winners!

That's right. Our Lake Shore student artists will be featured inside a popular brick-and-mortar business for an entire month! Founded in 2016, the 30625 Jefferson Ave location prides themselves on high-quality ingredients and customer service. But we think the best part is their community love and humanitarian efforts.

Parents and future Class of 2036 students will meet our amazing teachers, principals, and superintendent, while learning how to prepare for this exciting first year of school.

LSPS offers students full-day comprehensive instruction in core academic areas of English Language Arts, reading, writing, mathematics, science and social studies. Students also receive instruction from specialized teachers from technology, art, music, and physical education.

The Lake Shore Public Schools' Board of Education approved a $66.7 million no tax-rate increase bond proposal for the May 3rd, 2022 ballot and it passed!

Under the guiding principles of our districtwide initiative, the Positivity Project, the #PositivityInAction mindset is our top priority. These past three weeks we focused on the character strengths of SOCIAL INTELLIGENCE and FORGIVENESS.

People with the character strength of social intelligence are aware of other people’s thoughts and feelings. They understand why they do things.

Arianna, 5th grader at Violet Elementary, made the special, customized 5th grade shirt on behalf of her entire class which is comprised of 70 students.

There were 25 design submissions, voted by her community of peers. Arianna's design was creative and represented Violet and her class well.

We decided to share this story because we felt Arianna manages her feelings well, understanding that if her design wasn't successful, she would learn from that failure and move forward with grace.

Destiny Herod from Lake Shore High School saw her design come to life on behalf of the Shorian Shop. Destiny conceptualized the design while her Advanced Art friend, Elisa Henry, drew it.

She explained, "I looked at the logo on the website for inspiration, involved what we sell in the store in the design, and we created it using traditional paper and pencil."

Aren't our students so creative? Thank you, MyDeal Graphics for making their designs into t-shirts!

Bonus: The Lake Shore Foundation has approved $700 to purchase a Cricket and Heat Press for North Lake High School. More student-produced shirts? We're in!

People with the character strength of forgiveness like to forgive those who have done wrong. They accept that people make mistakes.

At our Masonic Heights Elementary and Violet Elementary Spelling Bees, mistakes turned in to more opportunities to practice and continue to hone their aptitude for spelling.

With correct spelling of words like serum and antigen, fifth graders Andrew Hunter from Masonic Heights Elementary and Gia Dhindsa from Violet Elementary were announced the first two champions of Lake Shore Public Schools' Spelling Bees.

Teachers along with supportive parents, worked tirelessly to help participants practice for this competition. Round by round, students took turns spelling words from the official list. They were allowed to have a word repeated, used in a sentence, or defined.

There were 25-30 finalists per elementary school, in total, but there could only be one winner each. Regardless of rank, we are proud of every contestant who tried to put their nerves aside to spell as many words as they could.

"I am so proud of my son, Andrew," exclaimed Heather Hunter, Andrew's mom. "He practiced his words for 30 minutes everyday. He is a great kid. Not only is he smart academically, he's caring. He loves his family and his dogs, Riley and Hunter." We are proud of him, too.

Second place runner-up from Violet Elementary was Kylee Machalak. She misspelled horoscope, but chose to not beat herself up about it. Her mother, Heather Machalak, was happy with her daughter's results. She said, "She did her best. She is her own worst critic, but should feel good about her outcome."

Through the support of family and Lake Shore staff, 4 students will be moving on to the Macomb Regional Spelling Bee set for Sunday, March 5th at 1pm.

Bonus: Congratulations to winner Mikayla-Rose Angeles from Rodgers Elementary was named the winner of their Spelling Bee!

Looking forward, our upcoming character strengths are OPM - Cheering others' success (2/6-2/10) and Love (2/13-2/17).

In Mrs. Fain's MiCI class at Lake Shore High School, students have the opportunity to participate in Career Based Instruction (CBI).

Students are placed at ACE Hardware, the Saint Clair Shores Library, EOS Cafe, and American House for the purpose of providing work experience and career exploration and given work of instructional value.

Every Friday Mary-Faith and Veronica work at ACE Hardware and check the store for stock, complete seasonal jobs such as watering flowers, grass blowing, and organizing the store. They also wipe off tables, mop floors, and sweep.

Victoria enjoys making sure all stock is forward-facing and organized. With the assistance of Paraprofessional Mrs. Sue, everything looks great. "Mrs. Sue is so nice and helpful," Victoria complimented.

Lead teacher Mrs. Fain is proud of this program. She said, "It helps develop strong positive relationships with employers and facilitates ongoing employment opportunities."

In Mrs. Bushaw's MiCI class at Kennedy Middle School, students created gumball machines, facilitated by Mrs. Dmochowski on her prep hour. This Adaptive Art lesson had Clippers working with surface area as they filled their containers with colorful balls.

There are both inside and outside of the classroom activities that provide excellent opportunities for our students.

We are excited to feature our teams of Pinewood Derby Car engineers at Kennedy Middle School.

Rewind to one week ago when we visited Mrs. Clow and Mr. Kensicki's Physical Science classes and watched as students drew a basic shapes, clamped their wood down on their tables, and used a hand saw to cut it. These 8th graders brainstormed vehicle names such as Briegatti Model Cheese and CodeName Pending.

Walter Adelman loved building and designing his car. He said, "My dad taught me how-to do this since age 5. I enjoy using tools and creating stuff."

Brielle Starks was impressed with her classmate's work. She explained, "There was a hot dog vehicle and one recreated like Lightening McQueen! The conceptualization was impressive and I personally enjoyed making something I am proud of."

Fast forward and we see small, driverless wooden cars powered only by gravity. Students studied Newton's 2nd Law and were able to design their own Pinewood Derby Car, from the kit provided, to compete in the Kennedy Pinewood Derby Championship. Principal Mr. Johnson and Assistant Principal Mr. Gaffigan will participate in this challenge.

Former Boy Scout and Class of 2019 graduate Josh Loptrone was the inspiration behind this class project. His passion for Boy Scouts and love or their annual wood car racing event prompted Mrs. Clow to turn his passion into practice. The Lake Shore Foundation paid for the Pinewood Derby kits this year The classes meet in the cafeteria to watch as the races began.

Teams The Super Peeler and The Sharks won their class races and will move on to compete against their competitive administrators. Thank you to all top 9 teams for your hard work!

In February we celebrate Black History Month with the achievements by African Americans and recognize their central role in U.S. history. One of the most influential African American leaders of all time is Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Dr. King made his mark by preaching nonviolent means of protesting segregation in the United States.

In Mrs. Reno's class at Masonic Heights Elementary, 3rd graders were asked to share a dream for the world just like MLK. Lillie Park, Grace Schmelbauer, Delilah Maxon, and Reese Kulhle wrote #OtherPeopleMatter goals like "everyone believing in themselves, spreading kindness, for the bad guys to become good, and for all animals to have a home."

These four ladies are examples of the kinds of students we are proud to serve at Lake Shore Public Schools.

We also asked for a more personal, fun dream and their imaginative minds exploded with ideas such as "become a TV star like Millie Bobby Brown, have my Rottweiler pet named Duke stay a puppy forever, have infinite closet space for all of my Burlington clothes, and the power of teleportation so I can always make my way home."

We are recognizing the participation of a "Leave Your Legacy" activity from Kennedy Middle School.

What is something you want to be remembered for? Our 6th-8th grade students will share several special skills, personal qualities, inventions, and quotes they live by on a featured bulletin board throughout the month of February.

Check out their 2022 display. Everyone wanted to be a part of this activity and share their legacies with others. We are looking forward to reading their forward-thinking reflections in 2023.
