March challenge category is celebrating trees as we usher in spring. While challenge categories can be literal, there is much to be said about the creative connections between books and categories. For instance, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources is sponsoring a fundraiser virtual 5k run/walk using painter Bob Ross' "Happy little trees" as a theme. In celebration, think Bob Ross biography, art books with trees, how to photograph in nature, etc. You get the idea.

It is the 100th Anniversary of the 19th Amendment! Women - go vote! While I have difficulty celebrating history in a "month", knowing that it was created because of the little attention given in the normal study of history, we do what we must until such a time that it is no longer needed. My recommendations are all fiction, centering on the society and cultural realities of women,, even after the vote. We have come far. Although not far enough.
The Background
It's so much easier to critically examine those things not sacred not to us. But what about when it is our sacred cows? Recent research shows the negative impact on early readers Dr. Seuss books can have. What do we do when we learn these truths? I'm not one for "banning", but am concerned when it involves creating in our littlest a love of reading. What are your thoughts? Does your school continue to celebrate as much as Seuss as reading? If not, how did you transition. Would you read the stories identified to your children? Classroom?
