SIEC Food Cooperative
Were you aware that the SIEC assists in facilitating a Commodity Food Consortium? There is no fee for SIEC member school districts to be a part of this Co-Op. The Food Service Directors from the districts meet at least 4 times per year. Although it was formed as a cooperative purchasing organization in 2005, not only do Food Service Directors work together on bids, they love to share ideas and team on other projects as well! This spring will include bids for dairy and bakery products and a possible bid extension with a commodity foods distributor. Nineteen school corporations and two parochial schools are Co-Op members and an additional six school corporations are associate members.
Since 2008, the Co-Op has held a Food Service Seminar each summer to provide training for food service employees. Last year 245 participants were in attendance! Due to requests, a special ServSafe Training and Exam are being held at the SIEC on March 13. If your school district would like to learn more about the Co-Op, contact Amy Gonnerman at the SIEC. ~Amy

Indiana Region 4 Migrant Center News
Learners Today, Leaders Tomorrow: Building Momentum in Migrant Education
We continue to stay busy throughout the winter season with our migrant program. After-school tutoring is ongoing in several school corporations. Sharing information between schools and regional staff keeps everyone up-to-date with fulfilling academic requirements and services students need to be successful.
Preparations are under way for this year’s busy season!
A parent meeting was held in Washington, Indiana in mid-February. After dinner, input was gathered from parents about their schools to complete a survey from the Indiana Department of Education. Opportunities for middle and high school students were discussed including available scholarships for high school seniors, attending the Indiana Latino Leadership Conference in early March, and attending the M-STEM500 day in May for middle school students at the Indianapolis Speedway. Spring preschool opportunities were also included during the meeting as well as details about the region’s summer school program so parents may begin planning early for these educational activities.
Professional development opportunities for summer teachers will be held in April and May to ensure they have the knowledge necessary to make the biggest impact with our students this summer. We are excited to have our PreK-12th grade summer school session at Clark Middle School which will run from June 5th through July 28th this year. We will have evening classes in English and credit accrual at our mobile classroom in Oaktown for our out-of-school youth who work during the day. Other opportunities available for these students will be in basic automotive services and building trades. Classes for out-of-school youth usually begin in May.
We are looking forward to reconnecting with students we know as they move into our region this spring and hope to meet many new students and families also!
~Debbie
