September 2021

From the Principal, Dr. Tobon

Viking Families and Friends,

It’s hard to believe we are more than halfway through the first grading period of the 2021-22 academic year. Life has a way of passing us by at a quick pace, and it can be challenging at times for a parent to keep up with a student’s progress in school. If you are not already receiving periodic updates from Skyward, please be sure to sign up for those. These updates are available to be sent automatically to your email on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. The Skyward updates have some settings that can be customized and are worth looking into. The Skyward updates are in addition to being a parent observer on Canvas, where you can be up to date on what is happening in your student’s classes.

As was mentioned in my Back to School letter, VHS is holding a Virtual Open House. You should find the link to this event here. This is the second year we have held this event virtually. My goal is that this approach will work better for you, our parents and guardians, as you can view the information at your convenience especially if you have multiple high school students. The information will also remain on our website for future reference.

Finally, I hope you have the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful weather. Fall is definitely knocking on our doors, as there are some trees whose leaves have already started to change colors. Be sure to get out and see all the beauty Mother Nature has to offer.

Club Spotlight: Key Club

Key Club is a student-led, high school organization. Members around the world are learning how to lead and stand for what’s right through service and volunteerism. In partnership with the Valparaiso Noon Kiwanis club, VHS students are making a positive impact as they serve others in their school and community.
Year round, the club works with community organizations to help with projects such as cleaning up parks, collecting school supplies, fundraising for Riley Children's Hospital and much more. Students also learn leadership skills by running meetings, planning projects and holding elected leadership positions at the club and district levels. At our August meeting, we painted rocks as a stress reliever for the students and to place in local parks.

Big picture

Ranked, A Musical

The VHS Drama Club will present the Indiana premiere of the musical Ranked on November 19th and 20th at 7pm and November 21 at 2pm in the VHS auditorium. Ranked is the somewhat dystopian story of a high school where the only thing that matters is class rank. The academic leader board determines who is Above the Average, and who is Below. In this intense culture of performance, students must find their place as they try desperately to stay above the status quo, even if that means destroying themselves and each other to score their way to the top. When an accusation of academic dishonesty throws the "system" into chaos, students grapple with understanding what they are worth, who decides, and what to do when it all comes crashing down. The fast paced script and contemporary pop/rock music captures the complexity of driven and vulnerable teenagers. Tickets are $10 at the door and the show is best suited for audiences 12 and up.
