Update From the Executive Director
Dear Colleagues,
The busses are rolling once again, which is a sure sign of school is in session. Some of you started last week, others this week. Next year will be a little different with August 24, 2020, being the earliest schools can begin. But, that's a whole year away. Let's focus on what you need to be doing now. If you do the following, the likelihood of a successful year will be GREATLY enhanced.
- "Move from rules to relationships."
- Expect success.
- Share with your teachers 6.5 times how much you appreciate them and value the critical role they play. "The highest calling of a free people is the role of a teacher."
- Be visible with and acknowledge your stakeholders (teachers, staff, students, parents, community) daily. You will increase stakeholder value by the end of the year.
- Have structures and processes in place that will honor voice. Have a set time weekly to meet with your administrative team to talk about the day to day issues of the school. Schedule regular meetings with the leadership team of the school to talk about big-picture issues. Have a weekly meeting with your counselor(s). Set aside time with students and parents each month.
- Focus on the development of the adults in your building so they can replicate the vision, mission, and core values of the school. Too many principals focus too much of their time on the students.
- Think of things that could go wrong before they do (Situational Awareness).
- Be on the move. It is hard to hit a moving target.
- TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF!!!
I have included excellent resources below from MLDS on "Critical Firsts" and Just Ask Publications that are FREE. They will provide a checkpoint for you and may serve as a reminder as you prioritize your day, week, and month. Don't forget, YOU (Principal) are the second most significant influencer of student achievement.
ADVANCED PLACEMENT AT FALL CONFERENCE
Doug and I had a phone conference last week with the College Board. They have agreed to present at the Fall Conference. See details below.
INVITE A MISSOURI LEGISLATOR TO YOUR SCHOOL THIS FALL
As you begin the school year, think about inviting your legislator to your school for a visit. The fall is an excellent time to start or strengthen a relationship with your elected official(s). You will help to educate them on important issues before the legislative session begins in January. Having them interact with staff and students will also provide essential insights for them. As they deliberate on educational issues during the legislative session, they will reflect on their visit to your school. FIND YOUR LEGISLATOR: Enter your home or school’s address for a list of state and federal legislators in your area. Write a letter or email inviting them to visit your school. If needed, follow up with a phone call. Our MoASSP office will assist you in scheduling and coordination. Call us at 573-445-5071. Once you have them scheduled, please share with us.
Whether you are aspiring, emerging, developing, or transformational, wherever you are on the “Principal’s Journey," it is a “matter of principal(ple).” Clark Mershon

Vision for the Future of Education in Missouri Presented at State BOE Meeting by former State Senator, David Pierce.
DESE, in partnership with the Hunt Institute and the Education Commission of the States (ECS), established and convened an independent committee to participate in designing a vision for the future of education in Missouri.
Leaders from across Missouri came together in the spring of 2019 to serve as members of the Commissioner’s Educational Policy Committee (Committee). During a spring State Board of Education retreat, Board members identified eight priorities for the state’s strategic plan, using Governor Parson’s two areas of focus—infrastructure and workforce development—and the Department's existing strategic plan to guide their conversations. From these priorities, the Committee discussed six foundational topics and identified a series of action steps for each.
- Building the Workforce through Early Childhood Education
- Teacher Preparation, Recruitment, and Retention
- Workforce Development and Tomorrow’s Economy
- Innovative and Flexible School Structures
- Using Data Systems
- Redesigning Accountability Systems
