As 2021 draws to a close, we all make plans for the holiday break and the new year. This newsletter has a list of our spring social studies offerings and a bit of news from TEA. Many blessings to you all during this time and hope to see you in the new year.

JANUARY HAPPENINGS

Historically Speaking-Texas Holocaust Remembrance Week

January 6, 2022-Join us for a one-hour zoom session after school to prepare and plan for teaching during Texas Holocaust Remembrance Week, January 24-28, 2022. Resources from Texas' four Holocaust Museums will be shared during the zoom.

8th Grade U Session #4 Reform and Sectionalism

January 13, 2022-8th Grade Social Studies teachers will meet to work on content knowledge, strategies, and resources to help with unit instruction and student mastery. Topics: Age of Reform and Sectionalism

New to Teaching Social Studies Day 2

January 25, 2022-New to teaching or just new to teaching social studies? We will continue to build content knowledge of the TEKS, work on student engagement and planning for social studies instruction. Even if you didn't attend Day 1, please join us!

Planning with End in Mind U.S. History EOC Session #3

January 26, 2021-This planning session is part of the 2021-2022 school year series to continue preparations for student success on the high school U.S. History assessment.

FEBRUARY HAPPENINGS

Historically Speaking- Social Studies STAAR Redesign

February 3, 2022-Join us for a one-hour zoom session that will be dedicated to the STAAR resign as it impacts our two social studies assessments. The latest social studies testing information from TEA will be shared with participants.

Region 17's 8th Grade Social Studies U Session #5

February 10, 2021- 8th grade Social Studies teachers will meet to do a deep dive into the next units' content and instruction. Topics: Civil War and Reconstruction

March 2, 2021-This 6 hour institute for 8th Grade teachers includes a session designed to address TEKS for teaching the Civil War and a session on resources and strategies to teach and review for the state assessment.

March 23, 2022-Register a team or individual from grades 9-12 to participate in this year's Citizen Bee contest sponsored by Texas Law-Related Education. Send an email to sblankenship@esc17.net for more information about registration.

March 30, 2022-This session will be all about building a data-driven STAAR Review for your 8th graders. The session will provide time and materials to walk away with a classroom-ready review.
