PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
We had a great week as we start the course card selections for next year. We also were able to see all the 5th graders coming to Lopez and their families. It is always a fun time for me to see who we will be building relationships for the next three years. I hope they are as excited as I am.
At the beginning of the year, I had talked about an added level of security coming in the form of metal detecting wands. Well on Friday, we conducted our first wanding. It went really well and it did not take much time away from the classroom at all. The kids were very cooperative and I am glad we are able to provide that safety measure. The procedure is very similar to what you might see going into a sporting arena, except that we take them all into the hall while the district's drug dog goes through the classroom. While that is happening, we bring them two at a time into the room to conduct the wanding and then send them back out.
8th grade parents, don't forget to take your kids to the Reagan Electives Fair Monday night. Check out the flier further down in this web page.
I have to give a shout out to the 8th grade boys basketball team. I went to Bush Wednesday night to watch as they finished the season undefeated and win the district championship. I was so proud of them. Go Panthers! Picture below.
Have a wonderful long weekend!

LOPEZ PANTHERS LEAD, SERVE AND INSPIRE
“At any given moment you have the POWER to say this is NOT how the story is going to END.”
How does this relate to teens and how can they apply this quote to their own lives? How can you the adult use the meaning of this quote?
Plan ahead and start a path for the future. Write your goal. Plan each week what you specifically need to achieve to accomplish the goal you set. Great minds, athletes, scientist, artists, musicians, parents, doctors, teachers set their mind on something and have a plan of action. So if it’s a college decision, career change, a game/competition, a relationship with your family or friends or starting a blog, the time will never be right. The time is NOW. Yes, it can be an uncomfortable feeling and , there may be risks in getting started. But the risk of not starting is greater. The time is now. Once you write your goal choose an accountability partner, someone that will help keep you stay on track.

10th Annual Ian's Cup
Ian's Foundation was formed in memory of Ian Fincke who tragically passed away at the age of 16, in October of 2008 as the result of fatal wounds sustained during a skateboarding accident. Ian was a previous student at Hardy Oak Elementary, Barbara Bush Middle School and both Reagan and Johnson High Schools. The foundation was formed to advance the safety and welfare of San Antonio youth through education and scholarship awards. To date almost $50,000 in scholarships has been awarded. Ian's Foundation also promotes helmet safety and has given out over 1,450 helmets in San Antonio and the surrounding areas. Ian's Foundation also supports STRAPS (South Texas Regional and Paralympic Sports). STRAPS was inspired by Ian's Foundation as a way to allow anyone in San Antonio with physical disabilities the opportunity to enjoy the game of soccer. You can read more about the foundation at www.IansFoundation.org.
We will be offering our annual spring soccer clinic for the San Antonio youth as one of our major fundraisers for the Ian's Cup scholarship fund. The clinic will be held on Sunday, February 17th at the Mays YMCA from 2-4PM (with registration from 1:30-2:00) The cost of the clinic is $30 if pre-registered and $35 the day of the clinic. It will include a 2hr clinic as well as a 2019 Ian's Cup t-shirt. The deadline for t-shirt pre-orders and pre-registration for the soccer clinic to ensure a 2019 Ian's Cup t-shirt the day of the clinic is Sunday, February 10th. Trainers will include local high school coaches, club trainers and high school soccer players from Johnson and Reagan, as they must volunteer at one of the foundation's community service events to be eligible for a scholarship. This year's soccer clinic falls on what would have been Ian's 27th birthday. You can help make this the most memorable Ian's Cup Clinic to date with an amazing birthday celebration in his memory. Register today! You can read more about the events at www.IansCup.org.
