Mrs. Britton- English 9
What's Up in 132
About me!
I am so excited to have the opportunity to get to know each of your students this semester! We are off to a great start, and I can tell that our time together is going to fly! I would like to share a little about myself, in hopes that it will open up doors for communication! I am from Athens, AL where I graduated from Athens High in 2004. I earned a degree in English and a Master's in Education from The University of North Alabama where I also participated in the Theater program and was a member of Phi Mu. While completing my Master's, I worked as a writing specialist and later began teaching 7th grade at Oak Park Middle School in Decatur, AL. I married my husband in 2012 and moved to Madison. We now have an 18 month old son named Grant. This is my first year at Sparkman 9 and I am LOVING it! I am excited to teach your students how to read a text and find deeper meaning in it, but I am also excited to show them that it is okay for there to be more than one answer to a question! That is what I love about literature...it is what we need it to be for us in that moment! I hope that I get the opportunity to get to know each of you. Please know that I am here for you if you have any questions or concerns!
Summer Reading!
I know we are wishing for warm weather right about now...maybe not so much for an assignment on a book that we read so long ago! With that being said, your child has been given an extra 4 weeks to take care any summer reading that they did (or didn't) do. The assignment will be given on Monday, Jan. 26.
Book Study
We will begin To Kill a Mockingbird next week. I have enough copies for each student to take one home (thanks to a huge donation) and there will be required reading at home. I am working on recording myself reading for my struggling readers to listen to, but they will have to have access to the internet to get to it. Please keep in mind that the computer lab is open in the mornings for their use as well. This text contains controversial content that I hope will spark something in your students. This is a great text for you to read with your student so that you can have discussion about it at home! When they see you read, they are more likely to find value in it themselves. My PreAP students read this text over the summer. We will spend this unit diving deep into the text and writing literary analysis.
Staying Connected
Your student has an Edmodo account set up that directly links to my class page. I use this site to send reminders, upload resources, and post assignments. You can also log-in as a parent if you would like to stay up to date with what is going on!
Weekly Quizzes
Your student will have a DGP (daily grammar practice) and Vocabulary quiz each week. They will also have a vocabulary assignment due each week. We work with these throughout the week and students have material to study. Please encourage them to spend some time with this each night.
