American Heart Month

February 2022

The Heart of the Matter

Did you know the heart beats about 2.5 billion times over the average lifetime, pushing many millions of gallons of nutrient-rich blood to every organ, tissue and cell in the body. This never-ending and almost unfathomable workload of the heart illustrates how critical it is for us to embrace heart-healthy behaviors.

In this edition of Positive Pulse, download the Smola Consulting Heart Healthy Challenge, register for the Speaker Series, access the Berkeley Happiness Calendar, and if you're looking for a special way to connect with your significant other, join former Speaker Series guest Michael Lee and Lori Bashour for an online couples mindful date night.

Life's Simple 7 Heart Healthy Challenge

Big picture

The American Heart Association has defined ideal cardiovascular health based on seven risk factors (Life's Simple 7) that people can improve through lifestyle changes: smoking status, physical activity, weight, diet, blood glucose, cholesterol, and blood pressure. The Smola Consulting Wellness Team created a self-directed Heart Healthy Challenge designed to encourage behaviors that improve heart health. Grab a family member, friend, neighbor or colleague and start your path to a healthier heart today! Challenge calendar is attached in the email and linked in the button below!

The best way to prevent the onset of cardiovascular disease is to understand your individual risk factors. Visit the CDC Heart Disease resource page to learn more about risk factors, and the lifestyle changes that can help mitigate any existing or future risk.

Access Life's Simple 7, My Life Check, for an interactive online tool that helps assess and track heart health information to gain a better understanding of your risk for heart disease and stroke.

Heart Healthy Challenge Calendar

The activities in this challenge help to establish habits and behaviors as they relate to the AHA's Life's Simple 7. When you get to Week 2 in the challenge see if you can carry over the activities from Week 1, repeating week after week.
