Scrip Tidbits

Did you know… we are half way through the school year and the Scrip program has brought in over $5500 towards tuition accounts and teacher grants so far? We have just distributed over $2700 towards family tuition accounts and funded over 10 teacher supply grants ($200 each). We can only make this happen with your continued support. Thanks for thinking “SCRIP” when you make your purchases!

If you have any questions about Scrip, please contact Bev Williams or Shannon Schroeder at scrip@stceciliaschoolames.org

Catholic Education Week

The last week in January is traditionally Catholic Schools Week. In the past, this week has been to recognize the schools that offer the outstanding programs provided by our catholic schools in Ames and across the nation. This year we will continue with many of the same traditions that have occurred in the past with a variety of events that recognize the people that make our school succeed. One significant change is we are using the week as recognition of all of our Catholic Education Programs. We are referring to the week as Catholic Education Week (CEW) as we want to recognize the programming found in our PK-5 program, but also the Faith Formation and Youth Ministry Programs. The people that are a part of these programs are helping in the work to prepare our young people as they become the future of our parish. I hope that you will use this week as a chance to say thank you to all of those that work with our young people at St. Cecilia School and Parish. Please join us for a part of the various activities that we have to celebrate Catholic Education Week.

Please click here Catholic Education Week Agenda to see our community service projects and special events! Also, look for the family project in your child’s Friday folder. These are due back on Friday, January 24, 2014. Let’s make this a great Catholic Education Week!

Notes from the Principal

Catholic School Board

Make a Difference in 2014! Prayerfully consider nominating someone you know for the Catholic School Board during the nomination period in March.

The Catholic School Board meets once per month and will need at least two new members during this election. Watch the bulletin in February and March for more information. If you have questions about serving on the Catholic School Board - Call the school at 232-5290.

Tuition Tax Credit 2013

All Iowa taxpayers who send their children to our schools can claim this tuition tax credit, twenty-five (25%) percent of the first one thousand ($1,000) dollars for each dependent kindergarten through grade twelve. Please check with your accountant on any other questions. If you’d like this form signed by the principal, please complete page two (2) of the attachment and send it to the school office. Mr. Rowlands will sign and date it and it’ll be returned within 2-3 days.

Protection of Children

Attached to this newsletter is the fourth of a five part series of parent NewsNotes from the Office for the Protection of Children from the Archdiocese of Dubuque. The purpose of these publications is to help all of us be more informed of the issues and topics related to the abuse of children. It is our sincere hope that by partnering together we can continually provide the safest possible environment for all our young people to grow into healthy, Christ-filled adults. Future NewsNotes will be distributed in February. Additional resources can be found at the Virtus website at http://www.virtusonline.org.

Protect Our Children NewsNote

Monday, January 20

There are no classes on Monday, January 20th, as the teachers will have a workshop day. As a parent, these days are sometimes inconvenient as you scramble to find day care arrangements for your children, but they are very important for our staff. We use the days in a variety of ways but there are four central themes to these days. Each month we use one of the Wednesday in-service for our own faith building as a staff. This is critical for us to continue to grow in our faith as we work with your children. The second use is for development of teaching strategies in the room. We are looking at a variety of strategies teachers can use in the room to improve instruction each day. The more strategies they have, the better they can meet the student needs. The next area we work with is the Iowa Core. The work by staff here is to implement the Iowa Core into the St. Cecilia’s daily programming. The Iowa Core is more than revising curriculum and will become an ongoing improvement process for the school. The fourth strand of our work is to implement Learning Communities in the building. We are working with small groups that work in teams to identify issues from student concerns to teacher-identified problems or learning possibilities. As you can see, we do use the full days and early dismissal in-services as a critical component of our ongoing improvement process. Our goal is for us to improve, so we can improve the learning opportunities for your children.

All School Mass, January 22

Remember to join us at Mass on January 22 as the 5th grade will be planning and performing the various roles at Mass and hosting a coffee following Mass in the social hall.

Marketing Meeting

The Marketing Committee is meeting next Thursday, January 23rd, at 6:30 p.m. in Room 530 of the Education Center, to plan future marketing opportunities. If you’d like to attend, please enter through the south doors behind the Education Center. The committee is moving to incorporate plans to make this a marketing effort for the parish and school. The future strength and growth of the parish and school are tied together and the committee is looking for involvement from the school and parish community as we go forward. Hopefully, we can make the plans that will show the Ames community the opportunities that St Cecilia’s offers in their faith lives.
