Last May, Butler raised over $15,000 for Volunteers for International Development and Aid, a non-profit organization co-founded by Ms. Sonnie, which used the money to build a new school in Ghana. The new school has three classrooms, an office and a storage room for supplies. Last June, two Butler teachers, Ms. Tessa Albin and Ms. Kathryn Sonnie, traveled to help with the construction of this school. The teachers presented their experience to the Butler students at our town meeting on January 8, 2013. The new school will open in the next few weeks. This experience is just one of the ways that Butler Bears learn that through teamwork they can change the lives of others.
Geography Bee
Students in fifth and sixth grades competed in the National Geographic Geography Bee at Butler Elementary. Congratulations to all of our participants and our winners: Susan Liu, first place; Gavin Campbell, second place; and Gabriel Salgado, third place.
Manners Message
Our manners message of the week began on Monday, January 7. Students receive weekly reminders about showing good manners at home and at school. So far, we have discussed saying, "Please and thank you,” You’re welcome,” and greeting other people with a “Good morning, how are you today?”
Sixth Grade Assessment
"What is Autism and How Does it Affect Children?" "How did D-Day Impact the Outcome of WWII?" Over the past few weeks, all Butler sixth graders have been hard at work on their Sixth Grade Assessments, which include a written, oral, and multi-media presentation on a specific research question of their choosing.
