FHS Library Quarterly
Winter 2023
"And as we sit long hours quietly,
The very room itself becomes a friend,
The confidant of intimate hopes and fears;
A place where are engendered pleasant thoughts,
And possibilities before unguessed
Come to fruition born of sympathy."
- Amy Lowell, "The Boston Athanaeum"

Mrs. May's Book Pick: Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garbus
FHS Technology Support guru Emerson Portillo's book pick: Man's Search for Meaning
This 1946 book by Viktor Frankl chronicling his experiences as a prisoner in Nazi concentration camps during World War II, and describing his psychotherapeutic method, which involved identifying a purpose in life to feel positive about, and then immersively imagining that outcome. There were 3 main lessons I learned from reading Man's Search for Meaning: human kindness can be found in the most surprising places; the true test of our character is revealed in how we act; the power of purpose.
