Entry #1: Media Literacy
Media can mean a lot of things. When I think of media, I think of the world because media is everywhere. Everyone has access to media with no limitations. When I think of media, I think of news; good news, bad news, or just news in general. On the television we have talk shows, reality shows, and there are award shows that are broadcasted. Believe it or not, all of these are a kind of media. They give more publicity to people who are already famous, or who are trying to make an impact on the world, or possibly just anything or anyone that people feel deserves some kind of publicity or recognition. Media, like all things, has pros and cons. Like I mentioned before, media can give people all kinds of recognition. There are those who get recognition for making people see the world a little different, or maybe because they put a smile on people’s faces. But there are those who receive bad recognition, for the most part, for something that was wrong or not appropriate. For example, when there are school shootings, the person behind the shooting gets bad recognition and everyone some kind of action to be taken. They put their picture all over the news and on the internet so that people will know who the person is and what they did. That’s the kind of recognition media can give; a good one or a bad one.

What It Means to Me
Media Literacy, to me, means being able to understand media and how it works; what message they're trying to get across.
What It Is To Be Media Literate
To be media literate is to be able to understand media and the messages that are being given through it. Also, it means to be able to create kinds of media. It could probably be a webpage or a page on social media. In this generation, it’s very important for people to be media literate because all we are surrounded by is media; like internet and all kinds of technology. Media literacy can help you make money, get information, and sometimes can actually help you pass a class. Media literacy can benefit people in countless ways.
Entry #2 : V for Vendetta
In V for Vendetta (2005) during V’s speech on London’s news channel BTN, V claims that “there is something terribly wrong with this country.” (2). He emphasizes his statement by pointing out that there is a problem and tells the people of London that “where you once had freedom to object, to think and speak as you saw fit, you now have censors…” (3), by questioning “how did this happen? Who’s to blame?” (3) for the corruption of parliament, and by calling the people of London to stand up against parliament with him, and by challenging them “if you see what I see, if you feel as I feel, and if you seek as I seek, then I ask you to stand beside me…” (5). Using parliament as the main reason for the corruption of the country, V sparks a thought in each individual watching in order to open the people’s eyes so that they can see what they let happen because of fear. In using various tones throughout the speech, V puts himself in the people’s shoes so that they will understand that he is one of them, that if he could do it, they can do it too.

Entry #4 : Winston as an Archetype
The definition of an archetype is the original model or pattern of something that is to be copied. Winston is an archetype because he has still held on to his humanity and his emotions. Its pretty ironic saying this because in chapter two, O'Brien says "You are a flaw in the pattern, Winston. You are a stain that must be wiped out." When in reality, Winston is the closest thing that Oceania has in its society to what being human really is. Although Winston lives in that society and abides by a few of its rules, he doesn't conform because he knows that the society Oceania is isn't right. The way of human nature is violated by the laws and surveillance. Being an archetype means being truth and right. Its the original and if you know the original (truth), the copy will be no good for you.
Entry #5 : O'Brien: Victim or Villan
Entry #6 : Superbowl Commercial "Toasted"
Entry #7 : Reflection
I have to say that I have really enjoyed this course, and my views have definitely changed throughout this course. At the beginning of this course, I used to not put too much importance to everything that was going on in this country and in the world. When tragedies would happen and when possible threats had occurred, I wouldn’t put too much importance to it; when I would listen to what President Obama said, I would believe everything he would say. Anything that would come from government, I would blindly believe them. Now, after this course, everything that comes from government, I find fishy and I deep, down don’t trust them. After watching V for Vendetta, reading 1984, and learning more about Edward Snowden, it made me question our government. I don’t feel as safe as I used to when I didn’t “care” about anything going on in our country and our world. I now want to see what the president and all of his people have to say on social matters to see if I can actually believe them for once.
This course was the one of the most interesting courses I have taken in high school. I liked how this course was focused on the modern world and how they try to sell you information; telling you that its okay and it is good, when in reality, its evil and wrong. It really opened my eyes to so many things, but they were the smallest of things, especially in the way I see government. Honestly, I think this course was great just the way it is. I really enjoyed this course and found it very fun and interesting. It is a course that, I hope, will still continue for so that when my younger siblings become seniors, they will take it and learn about how corrupt our world and country really is. Another thing I liked was being able to learn how to do MLA format because in Miami, they never really taught us how to do MLA format; I came to learn this now that I’m a senior.
Entry #8 : Can We Auto-Correct Humanity
Prince Ea’s message was very strong and straight forward. He made a great point in saying that we have an unhealthy relationship with the technology today. We “spend 4 years of our lives looking down at a screen”, rather than looking up and living the moment. All this new technology has made us less attentive and mentally lazy. Honestly, this is a lifestyle that cannot become permanent in today’s society. To ensure this doesn’t become permanent, we should announce everything that was pointed out in Prince Ea’s video, explaining how this is not a great lifestyle. There should be commercials that assert to the people that we cannot auto-correct humanity.
I have to admit that social media is addicting. I myself spend a lot of time on social media and I do catch how it takes me out of the moment. For example, we had a movie night at my house not too long ago and we invited the entire family; we had a full house. Earlier that day, I posted a picture and was getting likes, so I obviously wanted to see how many likes I was getting and who was liking my picture. At one point, I caught that I had excluded myself from all the fun everyone was having. In that moment, I saw how “addicted” I was to social media. From then on, I try my best to not be on my phone or on social media while my family and I are doing something together. Personally, I think it is possible to manage how much time you’re on your phone or on social media. In order to do that, you have to be willing to change your routine of being on all that stuff all the time. That’s all there is to it.
Because social media has so much power, you can either let it help you or enslave you. The good about social media is that you get to see people you love grow and you can keep in contact with those you have history with. Our focus on social media shouldn’t be based on how many likes we get, it should be based on entertainment and maintaining contact with people you care about. There are so many things you can do with social media and its power…use it for the better.
