A look at happenings at First United Methodist Church Sealy

This Sunday, Jan. 10: Baptism of the Lord & New Sermon Series

Pastor Curtis begins a new sermon series this weekend, focusing on the “Firsts” in the life of Jesus. For the next five weeks, we'll explore the beginnings of the ministry of Jesus and help the church get ready for the work that to be done during the 40 days of Lent.

We will also celebrate the Baptism of the Lord this Sunday. Christian baptism is rife with meaning. This weekend, we'll remember our baptism and affirm the Spirit that lives and moves and breathes through us.

The Pastor's Pen

Easter in 2016 falls on March 27. That sets the date of Ash Wednesday to February 10. And that in turn means that when you take out the “special purpose Sundays” of Baptism of the Lord (Jan. 10) and Transfiguration (Feb. 7), there are only three “Ordinary” Sundays in the Season after Epiphany this year.

This is a short time, but there remains an inner logic to this season, found in the texts themselves, especially the gospel readings, starting with Baptism of the Lord and continuing through Transfiguration.

That inner logic is a focus on the beginnings of the ministry of Jesus, you might even call them “firsts” in Jesus’ life. The purpose of that focus is to help the church get ready for the more intensive work of “spiritual midwifery” with candidates for baptism, confirmation, reaffirmation, or reconciliation during the 40 days of Lent.

Thank you to my church family for the generous Christmas gift. You were very kind and thoughtful. Playing for you each week is a joy! And to the choir - You are an amazing group of singers! Thank you, not only for your very much appreciated gift, but also for your dedication and sweet attitudes. I promise to use it for something fun! -- Kay Kenner Ashcraft

A very special ‘thank you’ to Kathy Duncan for volunteering her time and decorating the bulletin board in the Narthex. The first thing our guests and visitors see at FUMC is the Narthex. Thanks to Kathy for helping us put our best foot forward!
