Modern Dance

Modern dance was created as a breaking off from ballet. Unlike traditional ballet modern was much more angular and grounded, allowing dancers to move much differently then both they and audiences were used to. Isadora Duncan was one of the founders of modem, as well as renowned dancer and choreographer Martha Graham. Their developed style was the "rebellion" to ballet and to some was considered quite weird initially. Today modern has greatly developed into many more contemporary and stylistic ideas.

Where and When?

Modern started in the late 19th century throughout America. It was a really spontaneous creation of a new style.

What is it?

Modern is a VERY broad genre. Each dance can be different stylistically, can take on multitudes of emotions, and can be performed in many different ways. Basically, modern is one of the most diverse styles out there.
