Traveling Trunk Follow Up

Our class enjoyed the visit of the Traveling Trunk on Friday from the Historic Columbia Foundation. Students participated in a discussion about classes of people during the Civil War Time Period and how class determined types of toys for children as well as education. Next, students had to opportunity to play some of the games children played during that time period such as pick up sticks, cup and ball game, marbles, and jacks to name a few. Thank you to Abby's Mom, Mrs. Hales, for volunteering to help with the games during the program!

Field Trip to Saluda Shoals

Our class will be going on a Science-related field trip to Saluda Shoals Park on Tuesday, April 5th. Information and permission slips have already gone home. Please return a completed permission slip and a check for $11 made out to LMES or cash by Friday, March 18. Please let me know if you have questions or concerns about the field trip.

SpringFling Silent Auction Class Basket

The LMES SpringFling 2016 is scheduled for Friday, April 8. Between now and Monday, March 21, our class will be collecting items and cash donations for our class silent auction basket. The theme for our class is USC Gamecocks. Please consider sending in items for our basket or money which would be put towards purchasing items for the basket. Our Homeroom Mom, Lisa Gallivan, will collect these items and money to make an awesome basket for our class. Thanks Lisa!!

Box Tops for Education

The Media Center will have a grade level Box Tops for Education contest March 7-18. Please save your Box Top UPC’s and send in during that time. For more information visit http://www.boxtops4education.com. What a wonderful way to recycle trash!

Math Update

In Math this week, we are wrapping up Chapter 10/Fractions with a test on Tuesday. Study guides went home last Thursday and again today. Next, we will move onto measurement.

ELA Update

This week, we will focus on using different ways to find context clues to determine the meaning of unknown words in a paragraph. We are reading a condensed version of Treasure Island while we look for context clues of unknown words. This is an ongoing skill for us which can be used when reading both fiction and non-fiction text.

In our grammar study, we will continue to identify and write compound sentences which are two sentences combined with a conjunction. Two sentences on the same topic will be connected with a conjunction such as for, an, nor, but, or, yet, so. (FAN BOYS)

In Writing, we are wrapping up our unit on how to write a Constructed Response answer. We are using our Social Studies and Science books a lot for this unit. Most of this writing will be done in the writer's notebook. Kids will practice using transitions (first, next, last), answering in complete sentences, and how to cite the text or author (according to the text, the author wrote).

Science Update

This week in Science, students will continue with Chapter 1/Living Things Grow and Change. Their focus will be on surviving in habitats. If you have questions about Science, please contact Mrs. Starkey at mstarkey@lexrich5.org.

Social Studies Update

This week, we will continue with Chapter 8/A Nation Divided. This is an interesting chapter about the Civil War and how it affected the people of South Carolina and the country.

I have been thrilled with the Antebellum Doll Projects and Student Presentations! Everyone did an excellent job of sharing their doll and speech bubble. Students in our class enjoyed having the opportunity to hear about each other's dolls as well as being able to ask questions of each other.
