4/6 Letter to Families

From Ms. Short

Dear Families,

As we learned today, Governor Cuomo extended NYS school closures until April 29.

At LLCS, our services and operations will remain the same as they have been the past couple of weeks, including continuing remote and online instruction, providing meal distribution, and only having essential staff in the building on a limited basis.

We also learned today that Board of Regents Chancellor Betty Rosa will be announcing the cancellation of Regents exams tomorrow. This is an unprecedented move by New York State that matches our uncertain times. I anticipate that tomorrow's announcement will include a lot of information that school districts will need to digest and then use to create plans of action. As I shared via our telephone messaging service today with high school students and their families, all New York State students are in the same situation. The Regents exams are a unifying assessment for students across the state. When decisions like this are made, we can count on coming together as a district team, as well as be rest assured that we will have the partnership of our neighboring districts and districts across the state in making sure we have questions answered and we create a sensible and fair path. As we have done throughout this whole experience, we will do our best based on what we know. I know the ramifications of Regents exams being cancelled is a concern for students and parents, and as soon as I have more information I will be in touch. We'll get through it, because the only way out is through!

In the more immediate future, we will soon be focusing on learning projects for April Break. On Wednesday afternoon we will be distributing our April break district-wide project to families. It is our current goal to distribute these materials to you online. There will be more specific information forthcoming on distribution. We are excited about the ideas that our teachers came up with. As I expressed in earlier correspondences, we all recognize the need to regroup, and it was our approach to create learning opportunities that continue our students' learning experiences, while also prompting our students to learn about their surroundings and enjoy the company of their families. Our team has worked together in a large group and breakout groups, and will be working on putting the finishing touches on things tomorrow and Wednesday. We look forward to sharing this with all of you!

I am thinking of all of you! The brisk air and sunshine were a welcome addition to the start of this week. Tomorrow is supposed to be a nice one too. I am here to help in any way that I can. Please just email me and we can figure it out from there.

I am continuing the digital lunch breaks, and tomorrow I invite the 5th and 6th graders to join me at 12:15 p.m.! Their invites are in their Gmail.

Have a good night. Stay home. Stay healthy. Take care.

Sincerely,

Ms. Noelle J. Short
