PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Kia ora koutou,

Welcome to Jacob who is a new student in Room 23. Well done on making such a great start to school.

Principal for the Day

Well done to Year 5 student Grace Davies who was our Principal for the day last Friday. This was an auctioned prize at the Big Night Out. A big thank you to Grace's parents Evan and Hilary for their amazing support.

Out of Zone Enrolments

Very shortly the Board will be announcing the number of out of zone enrolments we have for 2023. In order to do this with a degree of certainty, we need to know the number of in-zone students we have for 2023. If you have a child due to start in 2023 and have not yet enrolled them, can you please contact the school office asap. Thank you!

Daffodil Day

We raised $718.30 for the Cancer Society last Friday. Thank you to everyone for your generous support.

Cross Country Year 0-2

Unfortunately, due to the state of the school field, the Year 0-2 cross country has been postponed to Friday 23rd September.

Cross Country Year 3-6

The Year 3-6 Cross Country is still going ahead tomorrow with some slight changes. Anderson Park is very wet so the Council has allowed us to run the event, but only if we stay off the rugby fields. We have looked for alternative days to run this event, bit this is hard with an already busy calendar. We have decided that Cross Country is an event that can be run in all conditions and it will be good for the children to give it a go tomorrow. On this note, the children will get muddy (even if they don't slip over). Please ensure they bring a change of clothes to run in and a towel to wipe any excess mud off after the race.

There is limited space for the children to sit, so we are splitting Te Rito and Mahuri groups up.

Year 3 and 4 (Te Rito) children will head down at around 10:30am and the first race will be around 11am. They will return to school, as a group, when they have completed their races.

Year 5 and 6 (Mahuri) will head down after Morning Tea at 11:20am and have their first race at around 11:45am. Please let your child's class teacher know if you can assist us with walking to and from the park.

Please note these times are approximate only.

Pay it Forward Cards

Last year, Guy Sowman, currently a Year 4 student, inspired us to create some Pay it Forward cards. This week your child will bring home a Pay it Forward card and we encourage them to do something kind for someone they know. In turn, the recipient will pass the card on to someone else with a similar good deed.

Shona Burrough Retirement

At the end of this year, Mrs Burrough will retire as our Deputy Principal. Shona has been at HNP for 15 years and has driven our curriculum over this time. We wish Shona all the very best with her pending retirement and we will enjoy working alongside her for the next few months. The Board are currently in the process of appointing Shona's replacement and will announce this in due course.

Have a great week everyone.

The Supper Club

The Supper Club has been running at HNPS for the past few years. We have a freezer in the hall with frozen meals and baking for the school to use at its discretion when a family within the school has a family challenge and could do with a care package.

The freezer currently needs stocking up.

There are containers in the back room of the hall by the freezer so please feel free to take one to fill with a meal or baking, label/date and pop into the freezer. A bought meal would also be amazing if you aren’t a cook!

In addition, if you know of a family who would benefit from one of these please let the office know, it will be kept completely confidential.

Many thanks for helping support our school.

Positive Behaviour For Learning

Focus for the next few weeks is...

We put our belongings away responsibly.

We have had so many children leaving their jerseys lying around and our lost property box has been overflowing. Most jerseys have a name so these can be handed back. We are having a real push on children picking up their jerseys (and other belongings) and putting them away. We hope this push transfers to home also. Help us by encouraging your child to put their belongings away at home.

School Books

School Books.

We need your help!

Firstly, occasionally our school readers inadvertently get left at home. We really need to have them returned. Our bookroom is looking quite sad as we no longer have full sets of books to use with our reading groups. It costs a great deal to keep our supply of reading resources current and adequate in number to ensure each child has access to books at an appropriate level. So, please send in any books you may have at home.

Also, could you please ensure that your child returns their reading book straight back to their bookbag after it has been read - to help keep it from being damaged. Unfortunately, we have had a lot returned beyond repair. Thank you for your support with this.

Polly Pekapeka

Congratulations Lucia on a wonderful article written for the Kiwi Conservation Magazine around Polly's adventures while residing at HNP.

Lucia's full story is on their website - our Polly page: www.kcc.org.nz/polly-pekapeka-adventures

(scroll down to the bottom of the page)!

We can confirm that Lucia will be in the Nov issue of Wild Things as a conservation hero!

Keep up your great mahi for pekapeka and HNP!

My name is Polly Pekapeka, and I have just been to stay with Lucia in Havelock North.

I have been going absolutely batty helping Lucia’s Primary School raise lots of money for the long-tailed bat. I met Mrs Jarvis, and the school enviro-group, who worked very hard to raise awareness about long-tailed bats and how critically endangered they are.

The school learnt a song about bats and their echolocation. They read lots about bats, and put a slide show together about long-tailed bats. The school had a bat dressing-up competition and an art competition, and as a well-travelled bat, I got to judge them. The winners were amazing! I ate lots of Bennetto Pekapeka chocolate too!

Together we raised $1122.60! We gave the money to the Department of Conservation to help protect long-tailed Bats in Hawke’s Bay.

Best of all, I got to meet Poppy Pekapeka, who is a giant long-tailed bat who lives at Waikato Museum! We look quite alike so I think we may be long-lost cousins

** PTB T-Shirt Orders Close in Two Weeks **
