Six Traits Writing ~ Picture Books
Thanks to a grant from the Vigo County Education Foundation, we now have picture books recommended by Kristina Smekens to use with your writing lessons. These are organized in the Teacher Area of the library and you can check them out!
Six Trait Tubs
The tubs are located in the "Teacher Area" by the videos. The front of the tub is label by grade level.
Contents
The content card at the front of each tub will tell you what books are in the tub, and what trait each book goes with.
Trait Trackers
Some of the books contain a Trait Tracker. These trackers will tell you what other traits can be demonstrated with the picture book. Please leave these taped in the book.
New Arrivals
We now have a space for "new arrivals" in the library. It is located at the end of the check-out counter.
Banned Books Week ~ Septemer 25-October 1
Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. Typically held during the last week of September, it highlights the value of free and open access to information. Banned Books Week brings together the entire book community — librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types — in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular.
HERE is a list of 30 banned and challenged kids books that will make you feel terrible about humanity. Strega Nona? Little House on the Prairie? Winnie the Pooh!?! Oh, my.

Safari Montage
Thank you to the teachers who came to the in-service last Monday. Safari Montage is a site worth checking out! You can access Safari by going to Lost Creek's home page, and looking on the right side at the bottom for the link. If you need your user name, please let me know (or it is located on your EMPACC check stub). Remember to put a "s" before your employee number. Your password is your first and last initial, your two digit birth month, and your two digit birth day.
I am still in the learning stage myself, but I discover something new every time I use this site. I am learning to make "playlists" of video clips to use during lessons. A couple of neat features include:
1. You can preview in fast speed to see if the clip will work for your lessons.
2. Each long video is broken up into short clips of around 3 minutes, so you don't have to show the whole thing!
The tutorial can be found HERE.
