The Eagle Update!

Week of 09.15 - 09.22

Welcome to the Eagle Update!

Greetings, Eagle families and scholars! This is the eighth edition of The Eagle Update, a weekly newsletter to share news and information so our school community can be informed about all things GW. In this newsletter, you will find information about GW athletics, school counseling, upcoming events, clubs, and how parents can get involved at GW.

Title I

We are excited to inform you that GW is now a Title I school. This federal program allows for extra resources to be available to support our scholars academic achievement. Your scholar

will receive a flier outlining the responsibilities of the school, family, and scholar as it relates to Title I.

The goal of our Title I program is to improve teaching and learning, improve high school graduation rates, provide interventions for attendance, behavior, and increase family engagement in school processes. We are asking for your support in these efforts by attending our parent/family engagement meetings. These meetings will take place in the GW Auditorium. Parents, please join our Parent Family Advisory Council - PFAC

School Safety

School safety drills are an important aspect of being prepared in the event of a school crisis. It is important that our scholars take these drills seriously and follow all directions during the drill. I want to share the types of drills that are practiced at GW.

Fire Drill - At the sound of the alarm, scholars line up in an orderly fashion and follow the evacuation route posted in the room.

Lock Down Drill (threat inside the building) - At the announcement of a lock down, scholars will move away from doors and windows. Students in the hallway will enter the closest room. Teachers will lock doors, turn off lights, and cover windows. All instruction stops and everyone in the room must remain quite.

Lock Out/Modified or Soft Lock Down Drill (threat outside the building) - At the announcement of a lock out, scholars will return to their class. Students should not move through the hallway, but instruction may continue in the classroom.

Tornado Drill - Are executed on a nation-wide date. Teachers will be informed via the intercom that we are under a tornado warning. Teachers will accompany their students to the assigned area (exit off of 2nd floor) and instruct them to sit facing the wall with their head between their knees. If they have a coat they should pull it over their heads. Teachers should check their roll to determine that all students are present in the assigned area. An announcement will be made to return to class when the danger has passed.

Parents and guardians, please have conversations with your scholar about the importance of following all faculty/staff directions during safety drills.

Counseling Corner

Our school counselors have been hard at work with scheduling adjustments to ensure our scholars have the courses they need. The counseling department at GW has been reorganized with one counselor responsible for all seniors while our scholars in grades 9 - 11 are broken up alphabetically by last name. An assistant principal is also attached to a counselor and case load. A breakdown of counselor case loads is listed below. Students who need to see their counselor must make an appointment using the Google form that was emailed to all scholars earlier in the year. Below is a link to the form.
