"It's a Small World" Speech Lesson
On 12/22/16, Mrs. Lara, Mrs. Walsh and Mrs. Abene conducted a lesson for all the learning center classrooms with Disney's "It's A Small World" theme. The children completed multicultural paper dolls at home with their families to create a special bulletin board. Then teachers, parents and students engaged in a special lesson based on the senses of smell, sight, touch, taste and sound. Multicultural holiday music played while the children engaged in oral motor candy cane games, made pine trees from dried herbs and matched scented essential oil containers to photos such as egg nog, pine cones, fireplace and jelly donuts. Great fun was had by all !
Mrs. D'Amore & Mrs. Filerino's Preschool Happenings
The preschool classes at Shaler Academy are continuing to work on Winter themes including hibernation and animal homes. As part of our Language Arts activities, we are hearing different versions of The Three Little Pigs. The children will work with various materials to build the homes of the three little pigs. The children also made their own home and are learning their home address as well. The classes have come together to hear stories, further our discussions and work with a partner. As an extension activity, the children will hear "Peter the Robot" read a version of the Three Little Pigs as well.
First Grade "2017 Resolutions" Project
What an exciting start to the new year! In first grade we have been hard at work learning. Part of our learning includes setting goals and working to achieve them. To celebrate the spirit of the New Year, we completed 2017 resolutions. We decided on a resolution for each number of 2017: 2 goals to accomplish, 1 thing to stop (for 0), 1 new thing to learn, and 7 new books to read!
Our resolutions are now hanging in the hallways. We're working to accomplish these goals everyday. Our resolutions will be reminders that when we set our minds to something, we can accomplish anything!
SOUPER BOWL 2017
Bergen Boulevard is remembering our National Day of Service honoring Dr. Martin Luther King by holding a "Souper Bowl". The first graders in Mrs. Farelli's class created posters and presented them to all classes to motivate their fellow students to contribute a can and reach the school goal of 200 cans to help feed the hungry in our community.
The students will be practicing their math skills and will be keeping track of donations through the month of January. Stay tuned for the final total.......
Second Grade Project
On January 30th, 2017 our second graders will be participating in our "Living Wax Museum". Students are currently reading biographies about presidents, entertainers, artists, inventors, musicians, etc. On January 30th they will come to school dressed as their famous person. The students will be "live wax sculptures" and talk about themselves to visitors, in addition to completing written projects.
Parents are invited to visit our Wax Museum on January 30th between 9:00 am and 10:00 am and then again from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm. We hope to see you then!
