World Kindness Day
Did you know that November 13th is World Kindness Day? Schools around the world will celebrate this day on Monday, Nov. 14th. To recognize this day, we would like to do the following:
- Wear blue on Monday, Nov. 14th
- Paint a rock to bring to Oakland to start our own Kindness Rock Garden
The overall goal for World Kindness Day is “to highlight good deeds in the community focusing on the positive power and the common thread of kindness, which binds us.”
WORLD KINDNESS DAY ACTIVITIES
1. Perform at least three random acts of kindness today
2. Give extra (and extra-long) hugs today
3. Write a kindness poem to a loved one or friend

October 31st - Halloween
- Costumes should be school appropriate - please, no fake weapons, fake blood, or gory outfits
- Please do not send students in full facial makeup or masks that cover their entire faces
- Please make sure that students are able to put the costume on by themselves, with no assistance
- If you have a specific question regarding if something is appropriate for school, please reach out to the classroom teacher or building administration
Each teacher will be sending information about their classroom celebration. If you have specific questions, please reach out to your child's teacher.

Funny Face Challenge!
Here’s an art activity you can do at home with your student(s).
The funny face challenge requires a blank sheet of paper, something to draw with, something to color with, and 2 or 3 people to play.
The first person tells the next person a part of the face to draw- eyes, ears, nose, they get to choose what to start with! Then the second person draws that part… however they see fit. Silly, weird, abstract, normal, lopsided- anything goes!
Then the turn rotates. If there are 2 people, go back and forth with who tells and who draws. If there are 3, then go around in a circle- 1 tells 2 to draw, then 2 tells 3, then 3 tells 1.
Keep going until the paper is full and you decide to stop! Coloring the face can be fun as well, so take time to do that too.
My kids and I have made several silly faces together. I hope you try it out!
You can find the video at www.artforkidshub.com and search “funny face challenge,” or find it on YouTube at

Socktober! - Collection Ends November 4th!
This year marks the 8th Annual Socktober Drive by Ms. Campbell’s Class. An estimated 600,000 people are homeless in the United States. Last year, we collected over 1,000 items from students, families, and staff members!
We are asking for your help to make lives a little easier this winter. We need socks for adults, children, and babies. We also need mittens, gloves, hats, household goods, and toiletries. All items must be new and will be donated to our local Open Arms Mission and Antioch Traveling Closet.
Thank you so much for your support and help in making the lives of our local citizens easier! Our collection will run through the month of October. Even a pair of socks can make a big difference in a person's life!

Technology
iPad Information
Parent reminders regarding the new iPads:
Stickers and/or labels should not be placed on the iPad or chargers.
If there is an issue and an item is not working, please contact your building administrator to get a replacement as soon as possible.
Please help with the expectation of having the iPad charged once the student comes to school. It is very important that the student has a charged iPad so that class and instruction time isn’t lost accomplishing this task.
If possible, help show your student how to plug and unplug headphones in the headphone jack. The Technology Department has had numerous issues with broken plugs in the headphone jacks.
Please remind your student that the iPads are for school use, not personal use. They should not be used for taking personal pictures outside of school.
The iPads should be used for school-related work at home, not watching YouTube videos. YouTube can be a valuable educational tool when used appropriately. Please help us monitor this tool so that we can continue to utilize the value of it and not have the negative aspects.
The staff at Antioch CCSD 34 thank you for your continued support regarding the iPads and their value in enhancing the learning of your student. Please reach out to jcoon@antioch34.com with any questions or concerns.
Common Sense Media
The link below is a great link for parents to help teach their students about proper technology use and how to keep them safe using the internet. Antioch CCSD 34 uses some of the resources from this website as well to help with digital citizenship.
Additionally, Common Sense Media has information that can help with internet services or home devices. Please click here to find out if you qualify for free internet.

ALICE Training for Students
During the week of October 17 - 21 we introduced age-appropriate ALICE strategies to students using developmentally appropriate resources. Training consisted of scenario-based practice and developmentally appropriate discussion regarding how to respond during a critical event. Our Safety Update presented at our Community Safety Night that took place on Monday, October 3, 2022, is also posted on our website. Here are some sample lesson plans that were used to teach the ALICE concepts to our students:

Bus Safety
PAVE the way to bus stop safety!
The days are getting shorter and some of our students are waiting at their stops before the sun comes up. As important as their safety is to us, we can't always control what happens before we get to their bus stop. Here are a few helpful pointers they can put into practice to help ensure that our precious cargo can get safely from home to bus stop and then to school.
P stands for Prompt. Set an alarm if that helps, and allow yourself adequate time to gather your belongings and get to your stop without rushing. Your driver needs you at your stop five minutes before your assigned time so you're not running to catch the bus.
A stands for Attentive. Pay attention to your surroundings. When walking to your bus stop, make sure you're watching for cars pulling down a driveway, bike riders and joggers. Pay attention to what appears out of place and stay clear of strange cars.
V stands for Visible. Especially during these darker months, be aware that you might be difficult to see, especially if you are dressed in dark colors. Consider carrying a flashlight with you so people can see you. There is gear available that runners use to increase their visibility in the dark. A white or brightly colored hat could save your life, just because you're easier to see.
E stands for Expect The unexpected. This is taking attentiveness to the next level.
Remember to be Prompt, Attentive, Visible and always Expecting the unexpected. These are great habits that will help you stay safe in your travels.
See you at the bus stop!
