COLLOQUIUM 2020!
Throughout this past year, seventeen teachers seeking to earn their clear credential participated in the Center for Teacher Innovation Induction (CTI) Program, chartering their own individual learning plans related to the California Standards for the Teaching Profession (CSTP) and executing inquiries to advance their teaching expertise. To culminate this year of induction, they participated in their final tasks - the Induction Colloquium, for which they created a Digital Reflection - a website that profiles who they are, their contributions to the teaching profession, and resources that they have found beneficial. For the Colloquium presentation, each teacher produced a FlipGrid video addressing elements of their Digital Reflection.
CTI employed Flipgrid, a digital process, for the video presentations. The forty-seven persons in attendance - the teachers, their reflective coaches, and SUSD site and district personnel participated in a virtual "gallery walk." We left the main meeting room and entered FlipGrid site to view the teachers' videos and record comments on their videos. (As a side note, the FlipGrid process provides for SUSD, as we continue contemplating digital instruction and online learning, a viable tool for engaging students in their learning.)
In a live facet of the Colloquium, teachers lauded and thanked their reflective coaches, who have supported them throughout the induction program. Comments filled the room, such as "I could not have done it without you." "I appreciate all the support you have given me." "You helped me believe that I could do it, even when I did not believe in myself." We know that the coaches make the difference in their teacher candidates' successes; and on behalf of the District, I say a huge "Thank you. You are a mainstay of support and encouragement to our teachers." Personally, I would like to make a special note of thanks to two of my coaches, Darcie Adams-Lopez and Damien Ryan, who have been reflective coaches continuously from the inception of our tenure with CTI (since 2015). In addition, asked by Angel Van Horn, CTI Program Advisor, Damien has facilitated Coach Connections, one of the CTI training sessions that coaches from all over the state attend.
Finally, I shared with them the Key Ceremony. I show a blank key and a notched key. The notched key, such as my car key, can open only one car - only mine. A blank untouched key, as a metaphor, signifies that these teachers eligible to receive their clear teaching credential can open the hearts and minds of any student. The key is attached to a purple ribbon, a color signifying royalty, which our credentialed teacher have become. Lastly, when worn around the neck, the key settles close to the heart. This signifies that touching the hearts of our students will promote their engagement and their learning. When we touch the heart, the mind will come along.
Congratulations to all.
